Portland Art Museum Shows Integrity

by TeachStreet
TS_Tree Portlanders should be proud to know that the Portland Art Museum has demonstrated its high level of integrity and transparency in regard to the art pieces that it acquires. In September the museum acquired a sculpture of Ganesha Stele that had little historical art record to track its origins with. It is not the kind of art piece you can design after taking a class or two in sculpting, so the museum is not worried about an impostor taking claim. The museum director, Brian Ferriso, said "this is all about transparency". Brian Ferriso is a member of the Association of Art Museum Directors ("AAMD") that was developed as an oversight committee for controversial matters just like these.

The purpose of the AAMD, as stated on their website, is to support its members in increasing the contribution of art museums to society.

by pearlgirl
broadarts BroadArts Theatre , Portland's award-wining, progressive musical theater company is creating Portland's future and they need your help... What? Tables are available on a sliding scale for organizations who would like to play a role in one or all of five upcoming themed, interactive community salons. The BroadArts Visionary Salons will be filled with discussions, presentations, and theatrics all working to bring together our rich community of local leaders, activists and visionaries in order to advocate for the future we want for Portland! Why? Two years ago, BroadArts received a grant from the City of Portland's VisionPDX project to involve and engage more than the 'usual suspects' in creating a thoughtful and inclusive plan for all residents. Help Neighborhood Bookstores Turn the Page—Shop Locally!

by shooter
bookstore-kids We've been hearing stories for several years now about the " death " of independent bookstores, and this article from the Tribune highlights challenges for several bookstores in town. I hope the prognosticators are proven wrong.

We are fortunate to live within blocks of Powell's , which makes it easy to fulfill our literary needs or kill a rainy afternoon just perusing the stacks. Browsing through a mega-chain just isn't the same experience, because the range of books offered is much narrower and makes it less likely for a random discovery to occur. (And then there's the personalized service!!!)

Independent bookstores are showing some signs of life. As the article points out, the American Booksellers Association (ABA) has seen its membership increase by over 100 stores in each of the last 3 years. While doing a little research for this post, I came across this graph that shows job trends for independent bookstores. After declining sharpl
