There's a huge range of subjects in Portland to learn from, whether you're looking for fire dancing with the Flamebuoyant Productions or CPR training with Larry Meres -- we should have it. Here's a quick peek into what Portland is looking to learn (based on most popular search terms on TeachStreet): Top 5 Searched Subjects on TeachStreet.com (Portland, OR) Guitar

5th Avenue Grows Grass—National Park(ing) Day

by pearlgirl
greened-spaces A surprising “green” transformation will take place in Portland on Friday, September 19th – one that will give Portlanders another reason to leave their cars at home. Parking spaces downtown may be sprouting grass… and a bench, or better! In an effort to reclaim the streets for National PARK(ing) Day , Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants’ Portland properties are spearheading local efforts for this one-day global event where artists, citizens and businesses temporarily transform parking spots into parks for the day in an effort to raise awareness and funds for the Trust For Public Land (TPL). TPL is the only national nonprofit dedicated to conserving land for public recreation and enjoyment.

Kimpton’s Hotel Monaco Portland , Hotel Vintage Plaza , Pazzo Ristorante , Red Star and other sponsors have collaborated to close down and convert an entire block of parking spaces into more than a dozen parks on SW 5th Ave. between Washington and

TBA Day Two » Antony and the Johnsons, Neal Medlyn

by shooter
113-Neal-Medlyn-9-5-2008-Primary TBA is definitely about contrasts.  In the course of a couple of hours, we went from the dreamy, haunting voice of Antony Hegarty to three guys re-creating Beyonce's 2007 live concert DVD.

Antony and the Johnsons

This was an amazing performance: a unique marriage of Antony's hypnotic vocals, powerful lyrics, and the lush sound of the orchestra. Antony's performance was somewhat awkward. He lacked the stage presence that I normally associate with such a powerful voice—but somehow that made the performance even more compelling.
Neal Medlyn

There is something so wrong, and yet so right, about a skinny white guy re-creating a Beyonce concert.  It was funny and mesmerizing at the same time.  The surreal nature of it was captivating, and the energy that Medlyn put into the performance was exciting.  He had the audience cheering and waving their hands as if they were watching Beyonce.  I think the photos t

Schintzer Upgrade Proposal Includes Street Closure

by shooter
schnitzer canert hall The Oregonian reports that the group who manages the Schnitz, the Metropolitan Exposition-Recreation Commission (MREC), is looking for an architect to design a major renovation for the hall. Patrons have been asking for upgrades for a while now, and really, the ladies could use a few extra restrooms.

Part of the upgrade could include permanently closing one block of SW Main adjacent to the hall. This has been proposed before, and today the block is closed for special events. The concern is what will happen to traffic if the one-way thoroughfare is permanently closed—it could be very inconvenient for drivers!

The interior renovation is likely to move forward and cost between $10 and $20 million. It will include improved acoustics, more comfortable seating, and, of course, more ladies restrooms.

Kids Marching Band - first practice was great!

by nancy
IMG_0124 Here's part of a post from I Love Portland . She's writing about the first practice of the Kids Marching Band. We were there, and it was a LOT of fun. I Love Portland says: "The Kids Marching Band had it’s first practice and it was a hit! We all introduced ourselves, talked about our instruments and costumes and practiced the marching song. Then Jake and Leeland, with their rhythm sticks and recorder, led us to Jamison Square where we showed off all of our fun to the other kids! It was great and we can’t wait to do it again! The innocent onlookers laughed and clapped." The photos really round out the story. You can see them here , at our flickr page.
