Tutors, Mentors Needed

by Trace
The Youth Employment Institute is a nonprofit organization in Northeast Portland that provides education, employment and personal development programs for youth.  One of our main services is our GED Preparation program which focuses on GED attainment in an alternative school setting.  We also provide specialized services for young parents, which include case management services, parenting education and an onsite child care center.   Additionally, we offer paid and unpaid work experiences, job readiness training and gang prevention services to the youth in our programs. There are a number of ways community members can get involved in our programs: Academic tutors work with the youth in our GED program. Tutors come in once or twice a week during the school day to tutor youth one-on-one in either writing or math. Mentors work with youth in our young parents program. Members of the business community provide job tours and / or job shadowing experiences in

November Fun with Isobel’s Clubhouse

by nancy
Many thanks to all our talented and generous  neighborhood volunteers  who have organized so many fun events for central Portland families in November. Our children have already had great interactions with arts and music.  The Museum of Contemporary Craft  Family Tour led by  Sassafras Art Tours  was a huge success. Families experienced the Manufractured exhibit in a whole new way, and had a lot of fun learning. And 23 elementary-school-aged performers from  My Smilin Violin  wowed a First Thursday audience last night with Suzuki compositions and ear-to-ear smiles. There must be a baking theme in the air… Tonight a  parent is teaching kids how to make koulourakia , a traditional Greek cookie.  Nuvrei  will teach families how to make traditional marzipan confections on November 18 th , and  Cupcake Jones will  teach kids how to frost and decorate cupcakes  on November 19 th .

2nd Annual Family Conversations

by nancy
2863753802_6eeb07b46b Please join Central Portland Families for our second annual Family Conversations. We believe that families are good for central Portland, and that central Portland is good for families. Come help us make it even better. Thursday, November 13th from 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM Monday, November 17th from 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM Bring your important issues, your ideas for the future of central Portland, and your enthusiasm for helping families from all walks of live thrive in central Portland. We'll serve refreshments, engage in conversations, enjoy our neighbors and talk about ways that we can work together. Lately we've been feeling reflective. Perhaps it's the seasons changing. Or the nearness to Thanksgiving... we have a lot to be thankful for. It could also be that Central Portland Families' one-year anniversary is fast approaching. Hard to believe that we came together for the first time in November 2007 with a couple Family Conversations, attended by thirteen families. Those grandpare

Neighborhood Diaries Project

by pearlgirl
diary Local artist Abe Ingle is beginning a new project tentatively titled "Neighborhood Diaries" that records location-based memories of residents in Portland neighborhoods—specifically the Buckman, Boise, Downtown, Northwest, King and Vernon neighborhoods. Ingle is recording the location-based memories of residents and then making free "walking-tour" podcasts that guide listeners through these neighborhoods' seemingly mundane street corners, swing sets, and benches, and communicating the rich, emotional history that make up our surroundings. Of course, in order to do this, he needs residents to (anonymously) volunteer their memories. Ingle has a mobile recording rig, and can meet  anywhere you'd like to record your memories. Any time on weekends and after 6 p.m. during the week. So, please take a moment to think about your experiences in and around these neighborhoods and try to think of your memories—happy, sad, funny and any other momentous occa

A Shout Out to Our Sponsors!

by pearlgirl
thank-you Neighborhood Notes would like to thank our generous sponsors for making this site possible. These local sponsors facilitate our news, commentary and events about YOUR neighborhood—so, show 'em a little love! Each week, we'll offer up some virtual gratitude, and give our readers a little tidbit about each of these local businesses. As you might have guessed, this means giving back to you with special deals, info or events. Enjoy!       Nolita knows jeans. And Nolita knows a good deal when we see one. So, we'd like to introduce [City of Others] ... This new denim line for men and women offers a youthful attitude with a mature outlook. These jeans are not only a great fit, but they are a bargain to boot ($100)! And they are designed with the same fit as Hudson jeans. City of Others also gives you the option to donate a portion of the proceeds from your purchase to a charity organization of your choice by entering a code from their tag online. - Good lookin

Trick or Vote!

by souk
TorVlogo Halloween is the one day each year we culturally expect a knock on the door and it also always falls just days before the election. You may be too old to trick-or-treat, but you're never too old to trick-or-vote. Studies show that face-to-face contact is the most effective method to boost voter turnout—increasing participation by as much as 8–12%.

Trick or Vote is the nation's largest non-partisan get-out-the-vote canvass hits the streets … in costume

"Trick or Vote" is the effort of a coalition working to make targeted voter contacts in urban areas on Halloween. Just 4 days before the election, costumed volunteers will canvass low-turnout, youth-dense precincts to remind people to vote, distribute nonpartisan voter guides, and generate both grassroots and media awareness of Election Day.

After the massive canvass we'll gather again for the Ghouls and Goblins Gala, a Halloween bash of epic proportions, and boogie down th

How Do I Sign Up to Become a Member of My Neighborhood Association?

by pearlgirl
nwnlogo By: Tracy Prince, Board Member— Goose Hollow Foothills League and NWNW Do you live on the inner West side of the Willamette River? Do you know what's going on in your neighborhood? Do you read about clean-up days in your neighborhood and get-togethers and meetings? Do you know how to get involved? Most people don't realize that they are NOT automatically a member of their neighborhood association. Sign up today to meet your neighbors at local events and work together to address local community issues. I first participated in my neighborhood, Goose Hollow, when someone attempted to break in to my house—while my family was home. I felt helpless until I contacted my neighborhood association and got involved. I've met so many neighbors through this process. Now we chat more when we see each other, email each other if we see anything suspicious, and stay in close contact about everything going on in our part of the city. It's a wonderful, empowering feeling knowing tha
