Shop Talk – The Paper Station
by alex
I'm not a big fan of air travel (too many people in too small a space with too many bumps and mechanical noises!) but I am a big fan of the Portland airport. It's a nice, manageable size, clean and organized, and best of all, they have some great shops where you can easily kill some time if you're early for a flight or waiting for a loved one to arrive.I especially love The Paper Station – as the name implies they have a great selection of greeting cards and other paper products (I found the cutest graduation card there not too long ago). No Guts, No Glory: Renovating the Silverado/Club Portland Complex
by pearlgirl
Thanks to Just Out for sharing the booty and giving us a glimpse into the renovation process of the old Silverado/Club Portland project. It's still hard to believe they're not knocking it flat—can you imagine converting a former bathhouse into a luxury hotel ? (the lap of luxury, perhaps?) Go, Gerding Edlen, Go!!! I'm definitely looking forward to the historian's take on this project and seeing how some of the, um, found objects are reused in the new hotel. Ths is definitely one of the more interesting, and ambitious, renovation projects around! Read the article at Just Out . photo: courtesy of Just Out

Get A Charge Out of Downtown
by pearlgirl
If you drive a plug-n-go vehicle, here's some good news: PGE installed a shiny new charging station right outside its headquarters at 121 SW Salmon. The company plans to install additional charging stations throughout Portland metro— find out where ! Q: What do the new stations look like and how do they work? A: With a modern, blue design, PGE developed the new charging stations to be easily recognizable and easy to use. Drivers simply park their cars at a station and plug in their vehicles the same way a household appliance plugs into the wall. During this test phase, there is no charge to use the stations. Learn more about the new charging stations here , here and here . update: here's another article at Daily Journal of Commerce

New plan to help Portland Office of Transportation
by shooter
Sam Adams may have shelved the idea of Safe, Sound and Green Streets, but at least he's recommending a way to deal with the Transportation Office budget shortfall. His idea is to dedicate the $4 million a year in unanticipated Utility License Fee revenue increase to the Portland Office of Transportation. While it will not address the backlog of basic service maintenance that is needed, it will prevent the Transportation Office from further cutting services.

The Perfect Food
by kerry
It's been hot around these parts. Real hot. Damn hot. And when it's sweltering outside, there's only one thing you need: Steaming hot soup. Recently, I made my first foray to Kenny & Zuke's, a NY-style Jewish delicatessen in downtown Portland. And even though it was about 700 degrees Fahrenheit outside, for some reason I wanted soup. Chicken Soup with Matzoh Balls, to be exact. And holy cow, was it delicious. It was dark, rich and salty, with big chunks of carrots and, I think, onions. You'd swear it was made with a beef broth, the stuff was so rich. Maybe it was, I have no idea. And the matzoh balls - big, delicious ping-pong balls of tender, matzoh-y goodness. All of it served steamy hot, of course. My mouth is watering right now, just remembering it. Just imagine how good it will taste when it's cold, windy and miserable outside -- bring on the rain! Or, hey, what about when I've got a horrendous flu of some sort - this soup will totally hit the spot. Hang on, how abo

Are You a Community Ambassador?
by pearlgirl
This weekend, I got a really sweet email from a neighbor in Kenton: she was concerned that we missed some really great events in her neighborhood! In a word: yes, we missed posting them—but not intentionally! (They're posted now, check 'em out here ) Portland has a very active neighborhood system and our goal is to offer news, events and commentary for all 95 Portland neighborhoods. If you are a community ambassador—someone who's in the know about your neighborhood—we'd love to have you represent your 'hood here on Neighborhood Notes and keep everyone informed on what life in your neighborhood is all about. If you're interested in being a community ambassador, send an email to talk@neighborhoodnotes.com and indicate your interest. If you'd prefer to keep a lower profile and just send tips, that's okay too! Send info to talk@neighborhoodnotes.com Thanks to everyone for all of the emails, comments and suggestions!!! We're implementing neighborhood photo galleries

Steel Bridge work to disrupt MAX trains
by shooter
This promises to be fun for commuters. At least the disruptions are for a relatively short term and the work that's being done will create a better system. Read the Portland Tribune's story .
