There were some interesting tidbits in today's news: a backyard favorite is listed as a harmful invader—don't be fooled by the butterflies and sweet fragrance, this plant is a killer. USPS is raising its shipping rates. This year, it really pays to ship things during, not after, the holidays. Metropolis Cycle Shop and Pedal Bike Tours share a new North Portland space. You might say it's a tandem arrangement. (eyeroll) A Portland holiday tradition goes green with the help of LED lighting. The State of Oregon Pinot

In a recent Wall Street Journal article, Oregon wines, especially our Pinot Noir, were reviewed. "We are delighted to report that Oregon Pinot continues its upward trajectory. The difference in the wines over the years is remarkable. We found again and again in this tasting that the wines have developed a confidence and depth that beautifully complement their lovely fruit. The wines have not only a purity of fruit but a purity of vision that is very attractive. Like Burgundy itself, these are wines that speak softly to the more romantic parts of our being." LA Times Reflecting On Portland

"L.A. could learn a thing or two from Portland...""The city is a veritable transit utopia where light rail goes to the airport, parking restrictions increase public transit use and free streetcar service benefits downtown businesses. It also has a 20-year head start on planning." In an interesting article the LA Times marvels at the strides Portland has made and continues to make.

Portland In the National News... Again!

USA Today reported that Portland was founded in the mid-19th century as a shipping and logging center (which prompted one of its first nicknames, Stumptown), and has been a poster child for progressive urban planning for decades. Check out the newspaper article online at USA Today .

Portland's Not Top Dog—Or Even in the Pack!

Seattle's public toilet project is flushed away, Portland's "Randy" gets installed next month

Seattle's attempt at providing public toilets has gone down the drain. The toilets will close August 1st and the structures sold for $89,000 each. It turns out that the maintenance costs were too high and toilets were so dirty even the homeless wouldn't use them.The New York Times story says other cities public toilet programs have fared better because the maintenance contracts are offset with advertising contracts and overall they haven't had the same issues keeping the toilets clean as Seattle did. Because of a law in Seattle, the maintenance costs could not be offset by advertising contracts so taxpayers paid for the entire cost.
Portland is mentioned in the story for Randy Leonard's cheaper toilet design. If his design catches on maybe we should call them "The Randy" kind of like the Brits call their toilets "The Loo". I'll leave the obvious jokes to others...

Portland among America's best for design

You knew this had to be true... From the Portland Business Journal : Portland is among the top five best cities for architecture and design, according to an independent study conducted by one of the world's leading architectural practices. Looking at 10 criteria including architecture awards, "green" design and public transit systems, New York-based RMJM Hillier, the North American division of the worldwide architecture firm RMJM, selected 10 cities leading the way in design policy and practice. Then the firm commissioned public opinion and research firm Zogby International to interview more than 1,000 residents of those cities on architecture and design issues and incorporated those results into the research to determine the final rankings.
