Tutors, Mentors Needed

The Youth Employment Institute is a nonprofit organization in Northeast Portland that provides education, employment and personal development programs for youth. One of our main services is our GED Preparation program which focuses on GED attainment in an alternative school setting. We also provide specialized services for young parents, which include case management services, parenting education and an onsite child care center. Additionally, we offer paid and unpaid work experiences, job readiness training and gang prevention services to the youth in our programs. There are a number of ways community members can get involved in our programs: Academic tutors work with the youth in our GED program. Tutors come in once or twice a week during the school day to tutor youth one-on-one in either writing or math. Mentors work with youth in our young parents program. 2008 Spirit of Portland Award winners announced

A group of 21 Portland individuals/organizations who have helped make our city shine have been named recipients of the Spirit of Portland Awards this year. In addition, nine others were chosen by Mayor Tom Potter to win the Mayor's Awards. All 30 winners will be recognized during an award ceremony Dec.11 at City Hall.

Portland PTA Clothing Center needs your donations!

The Portland Council PTA Clothing Center located at Marshall High School has already served over 600 students this year, with over 1000 volunteer hours.We served nearly 2000 students last year. The Clothing Center always needs gently used (no rips, tears or visible stains) clothing size 4T through 4X. We also take shoes, binders, back packs, PJ's, and toiletries. We are experiencing a greater need this year and are out of donations to hang on the racks. WE NEED YOUR HELP! Please check your closet and drawers for clothing that your family has outgrown. We especially need warm winter coats and boy's and girl's jeans all sizes. Please consider collecting new gloves, mittens, socks and underwear at your holiday party, office, club or group meeting. "Trick or Vote" is the effort of a coalition working to make targeted voter contacts in urban areas on Halloween. the emergency response system to be there for those in need?
Have you wanted to be more involved in your community in a truly meaningful way? Trauma Intervention Program of Portland/Vancouver, Inc. (TIP) is an organization of specially trained citizen volunteers helping citizens in crisis. TIP is seeking volunteers who will be trained to assist police, fire and emergency medical crews at the scene of traumatic incidents and sudden loss.
If you are a caring person, you can be part of the all volunteer TIP crisis response team. As a TIP volunteer, you will receive the training needed to be an effective helper and to function in the emergency response system. TIP volunteers work with local emergency responders and can be called to assist in any traumatic situation.

Presentation Leads Water Blogmistress to Strong Realization

I had a really neat experience yesterday. I was invited to the adidas campus, located in North Portland, to talk about the excellent quality of Portland's tap water . The folks over at adidas have organized a group of "sustainability ambassadors," who are working to improve "green" practices at their company, from head to toe. The idea is that the ambassadors meet periodically and not only decide on changes they would like to implement company-wide, but also to learn information to transmit to co-workers. I spent about 1/2 hour talking to this group of people about Portland's great tap water and worked on dispelling many of the myths and fears that people have about drinking from the tap . I was delighted that they not only listened incredibly intently to my presentation, but they also asked some great follow-up questions. I could tell that this group was really thinking about what I had told them. They even invited me back for their health fair in October. T

Dig in the Dirt for Beautiful Schools

Make your school shine! On Saturday, Aug. 23, join thousands of volunteers for Community Care Day, 9 a.m. to noon, to take on landscaping and groundskeeping at 75 schools. Click here to sign up. Tasks vary from school to school, but include weeding, pruning, edging and laying bark chips. The volunteer commitment is important to Portland Public Schools, which employs only four groundskeepers to care for about 100 sites. Event sponsors include Pacific Coast Fruit Company and Coastwide Laboratories. Hands On Greater Portland is overseeing volunteer coordination. Volunteers include PPS parents, students and current and retired staff; members of local faith communities, and other community partners. Community Care Day is part of Project: Community Care, a program launched in 2001 to match every school with volunteers and hold events throughout the school year.
