LA Times Reflecting On Portland

"L.A. could learn a thing or two from Portland...""The city is a veritable transit utopia where light rail goes to the airport, parking restrictions increase public transit use and free streetcar service benefits downtown businesses. It also has a 20-year head start on planning." In an interesting article the LA Times marvels at the strides Portland has made and continues to make.

Portland In the National News... Again!

USA Today reported that Portland was founded in the mid-19th century as a shipping and logging center (which prompted one of its first nicknames, Stumptown), and has been a poster child for progressive urban planning for decades. Check out the newspaper article online at USA Today .

Seattle's public toilet project is flushed away, Portland's "Randy" gets installed next month

Seattle's attempt at providing public toilets has gone down the drain. The toilets will close August 1st and the structures sold for $89,000 each. It turns out that the maintenance costs were too high and toilets were so dirty even the homeless wouldn't use them.The New York Times story says other cities public toilet programs have fared better because the maintenance contracts are offset with advertising contracts and overall they haven't had the same issues keeping the toilets clean as Seattle did. Because of a law in Seattle, the maintenance costs could not be offset by advertising contracts so taxpayers paid for the entire cost.
Portland is mentioned in the story for Randy Leonard's cheaper toilet design. If his design catches on maybe we should call them "The Randy" kind of like the Brits call their toilets "The Loo". I'll leave the obvious jokes to others...

Portland among America's best for design

You knew this had to be true... From the Portland Business Journal : Portland is among the top five best cities for architecture and design, according to an independent study conducted by one of the world's leading architectural practices. Looking at 10 criteria including architecture awards, "green" design and public transit systems, New York-based RMJM Hillier, the North American division of the worldwide architecture firm RMJM, selected 10 cities leading the way in design policy and practice. Then the firm commissioned public opinion and research firm Zogby International to interview more than 1,000 residents of those cities on architecture and design issues and incorporated those results into the research to determine the final rankings. Yet another reason to visit Portland and relish the fact that we live here—the artisan distillery scene is booming! From the Seattle Times...PORTLAND — You know folks in the southeastern part of this city reckon they are on to something big because the nickname game has commenced. Should the district be "Distillery Row"? "Libation Alley"? You get the picture. The small craft distillery scene has hit Portland, reminiscent of the microbrewery boom two decades ago. Young microbrewers and winemakers are now distilling whiskey, brandy, grappa and even absinthe. And taking a page from Kentucky's iconic whiskey distillers, they are beginning to host tours and tastings. With 17 microdistilleries in Oregon, and eight more startups expected across the state by year's end, spirits aficionados haven't seen anything like this in recent memory. Portland Makes NYT List of 31 Summer Stops

The New York Times has named 31 interesting places to visit this summer. Portland made the list as a foodie haven: "As far as foodie havens go, Portland has been better known for its vegan cafes and eco-hippie cooperatives than for restaurants with gastronomic ambitions. But an emerging locavore movement has changed that. Drawn by the city’s low rents and artsy vibe, young chefs are breaking the culinary mold and tapping into the Northwestern bounty of local fisheries, small meat purveyors and artisanal farms.
