Are You a Community Ambassador?
by pearlgirl
This weekend, I got a really sweet email from a neighbor in Kenton: she was concerned that we missed some really great events in her neighborhood! In a word: yes, we missed posting them—but not intentionally! (They're posted now, check 'em out here ) Portland has a very active neighborhood system and our goal is to offer news, events and commentary for all 95 Portland neighborhoods. If you are a community ambassador—someone who's in the know about your neighborhood—we'd love to have you represent your 'hood here on Neighborhood Notes and keep everyone informed on what life in your neighborhood is all about. If you're interested in being a community ambassador, send an email to talk@neighborhoodnotes.com and indicate your interest. If you'd prefer to keep a lower profile and just send tips, that's okay too! Send info to talk@neighborhoodnotes.com Thanks to everyone for all of the emails, comments and suggestions!!! We're implementing neighborhood photo galleries

Gas-Free Fridays - July 4th
by shooter
Gas-Free Fridays is a good excuse to get on my new city bike and cruise around town. Today I decided to get up early and go for a ride; I ended up at Sellwood Waterfront Park. It was a great way to start the day. So this Friday it's no car for me. Any last minute trips to the store for barbeque supplies, beer, etc will be on my bike. Actually, I'm trying to do many more of these trips by bike and avoid using my greatly-decreased-in-value SUV as much as possible. The vehicle is almost 10 years old, so it didn't have much value to begin with. But it has low miles, just in case you're interested... Yes that's me with my Amsterdam bike. You can never look cool in a bike helmet. From the BTA press release: Spurred by soaring gas prices and our country's overdependence on oil, bicycle advocates are urging Americans to show their patriotism this July 4th, what they're calling Independence from Oil Day, by pledging to make more gas-free trips. The "Gas-Free Fridays" campaign a

The '20-Minute' Neighborhood
by pearlgirl
Can you meet most of your daily needs within 20-minutes of your home? According to Daily Journal of Commerce's report on the Portland Plan's collaborative sessions , Portlanders want to live within walking distance of such amenities as schools, grocery stores, restaurants and more. The Bureau of Planning says 20-Minute Neighborhoods foster improved health, less impact on the environment and greater cultural tolerance. Two fine examples of '20-Minute Neighborhoods' in Portland are the Alberta Arts and Hawthorne Districts. Do you think that '20-Minute Neighborhoods' should play a prominent role in Portland's future?
