If you have been thinking about seeing The Curious Case of Benjamin Button , run, don't walk to see this remarkable film on the big screen. The film was directed by David Fincher (Fight Club) and based on an F. Scott Fitzgerald short story of the same title. Fitzgerald wrote that the story was inspired by a comment made by Mark Twain that it was "a pity that the best part of life came at the beginning and the worst part at the end." The film has the kind of voyeuristic feel of early Truman Capote or Carson McCullers, whose fiction always seemed to capture a microcosm of humanity that was both fascinating and exposing of the dark underbelly of the deep south. Benjamin Button is an emotionally complex epic, touching all of the deep places in the heart. It is a well-told tale that centers around the big themes in life; love, separation, fear of differences, and vulnerability related to aging and mortality, to name a few. New Stuff » Neighborhood Photo Galleries

Hi neighbors, Neighborhood Notes is pleased to announce the addition of photo galleries to our neighborhood pages—yep, all 95 of 'em! (See an example here .) This is a big project, and we need YOUR help. Please send us photos of your neighborhoods! Please include your name, website (if you're a professional photographer), and a little info about your submission. This can be as simple as the photo subject or location, or an elaboration on the who, what, when, where, and why of your photo. As we get more photos, we'll populate flickr photo galleries for every neighborhood and link them to each neighborhood page. In the future, we'll have some fun photo contests as well. Stay tuned for more details! Now, get out there and shoot something!

Summer Reading–not just for kids anymore

It's almost the middle of July—are you signed up for summer reading? I'm not asking about your 8-year-old, I want to know if you are participating. Why should kids have all the fun? Go to any Multnomah County Library to pick up a Read 4 Life card. Then read or listen (yes, you can listen too!) to 4-6 books, complete your card, and return it to the library to enter a drawing. You could be the winner of a McMenamin's gift certificate or the grand prize of a stay at Sylvia Beach Hotel in Newport. In addition to the opportunity to win a prize for yourself, your reading also is a model for the child in your life. Fireworks show downtown

I wish I had gotten these photos up over the weekend, but this weekend was incredibly busy. Friday evening I went out to the eastside esplanade and joined a large, but very relaxed, crowd of people to watch the fireworks. The show itself was great with two barges used to launch the fireworks. I was seated closer to one barge, so I focused on it. Being on the eastside, with the prevailing breeze, I had to contend with the smoke. That didn't really detract from the show, but some of my images look like illuminated clouds rather than spectacular fireworks. If you haven't viewed the show from the eastside you should give it a try. It's easy access, the skyline is a nice backdrop, and the people were great.

THE WORKS INFORMATION
The 2008 Time-Based Art Festival (TBA:08) marks the return of the late night den of provocative music, theatre, cabaret, and other delights otherwise known as THE WORKS. Along with all the wee hour events, this year's edition will also open in the daylight hours, playing host to the Visual Art Program of exhibitions and installations. The entire WORKS hullabaloo will be held at the newly developed Leftbank Project .
