Portland Makes NYT List of 31 Summer Stops

by pearlgirl
The New York Times has named 31 interesting places to visit this summer. Portland made the list as a foodie haven: "As far as foodie havens go, Portland has been better known for its vegan cafes and eco-hippie cooperatives than for restaurants with gastronomic ambitions. But an emerging locavore movement has changed that. Drawn by the city’s low rents and artsy vibe, young chefs are breaking the culinary mold and tapping into the Northwestern bounty of local fisheries, small meat purveyors and artisanal farms. Sample the heat at places like Clyde Common (Southwest 10th and Stark; 503-228-3333; www.clydecommon.com ), which serves novel dishes like crispy pork belly with blood orange marmalade." Here's Something My Hips Didn't Need to Know

by pearlgirl
stuffin_face_outside OMG. Fire On the Mountain is evil . Tonight, from 5-10pm they are selling their devil-icious wings for only 25 cents each. This is good for dine in only, so don't get any bright ideas... And for those folks who were looking forward to the wing-eating technique seminar... "Sara will not be hosting her wing-eating technique seminar tonight as previously advertised. She burned her wing eating finger while attempting to fry a piece of beef jerky and will be out of commission for a couple weeks. Please visit www.cluckbucket.com for all sorts of wing related information including dozens of wing eating techniques and wing restaurant reviews." Fire On the Mountain 4225 N. Le Pigeon - Another View

by pearlgirl
lepigeon From Portland Food and Drink... “Foie Gras”….”Lamb Belly”….”Foot and Tail Croquette”…”Beef Cheek Bourguignon”. Gee, where am I, in heaven? Nah, just Le Pigeon here in PDX, where the accolades have always come fast and furious for chef/owner Gabriel Rucker’s charnel house cuisine. Talk about respect for your raw material. If you’re a pig who happens to catch Gabriel’s eye, there’s a good chance that 95% of you will end up on his menu. w and I made the trek to GR’s offal outpost last night for my birthday dinner, and explored many and varied parts of God’s creatures. I always like walking into Le Pigeon’s cozy, warmly lit dining room. Plus, now that they have started taking reservations, the crap shoot that was getting a seat there has become more like a sure bet. We had rezzies for a table at 7:30, but this is one of those joints that if there is a seat at their tiny ring

Small label, big reward

by pearlgirl
121080235506559400 From the Portland Tribune... Not everyone wants to be a rock star. Behind the scenes of the local music industry, small, independently owned record labels are doing their part to get music to the fans, and, every once in a while, bump a local band into the big time.

“Small labels are the backbone of the scene,” says Isaac Slusarenko, who owns the record store Jackpot Records, and runs a small label himself.

In fact, there are so many small labels in Portland that insiders usually refuse to venture even a rough number. “Quite a bit of our store is from smaller labels,” Slusarenko says. “But it’s hard to say what a small label is anymore. … If you count anyone who makes a CD on their computer and has a MySpace page, then it could be thousands.”

“There’s just a pile of labels out there,” agrees Alex Steininger, who runs the label In Music We Trust. “There’s a new label croppin

"Ride Me" Bikes @ the Jupiter Hotel

by pearlgirl
A touch of Paris has arrived at the Jupiter Hotel with the addition of five authentic Parisian bicycles as a new hotel amenity for all guests. The green and white bikes were once part of the Paris Public Bike Program, called Roue Libre , and feature three and five speeds, racks, baskets, fenders, a bell and light. Hotel guests can reserve the bikes for $10 per half day and $20 for a full 24 hours. Dubbed “Ride Me” bikes by Jupiter’s owner Kelsey Bunker, the bikes are part of the hotel’s ongoing commitment to sustainable hospitality.

“Of course the bikes are also about FUN,” said Bunker. “We want to do our part to offer amenities in line with Portland’s mission as a “green” city to visit, as well as keeping with the Jupiter’s spirit of fostering indie creativity. “The new bicycle program is our answer to addressing the needs of both our guests…and the environment.” Jupiter Hotel 800 e.
