Multnomah electronic recycling project underway

by TeachStreet
TS_Tree This holiday season, as you head out to the market to buy ingredients to prepare a holiday meal or bake cookies for you know who, think about recycling your old electronic goodies in preparation for the new ones you may receive as gifts.  The materials that make up your electronic gadgets are often times toxic, therefore Multnomah County is offering its residents an alternative option for discarding their toxic trash.

You can recycle your old cell phones, PDAs, MP3 players, chargers and Bluetooth headsets into one of the free recycling bins at 11 locations across the county . You can find the drop boxes at libraries and other county buildings.

The program was started by Commissioner Jeff Cogen last month in anticipation of the coming holiday season.  The Environment Protection Agency predicts that we recycle only 20% of old cell phones, and that we hold onto 130 million unused phones.

Portland Voted Greenest City In The U.S.

by Agent503
green-recycle-img According to a ranking by SustainLane, Portland is the greenest city in the nation. The rankings track the unfolding story of cities working to improve their residents’ quality of life. Cities with decentralized energy supplies, renewable water sources, abundant mass transit etc score high. Green building and land use policies also play an important role in determining who's green and who's not. Portland's placing at the top may not come as a surprise to many, but the city may not be as green as it's made out to be. Find out more here . New Recycling Carts: How We Roll in Portland

by pearlgirl
medium_rollcartwo You can sort less, recycle more than ever before, and set them at the curb less frequently, but Portland's new recycling and yard debris roll carts will never accept (unrecyclable) garbage items meant for the landfill. Portland's curbside recycling program, administered by the City of Portland Office of Sustainable Development in partnership with 23 garbage and recycling companies, delivered blue recycling and green yard debris roll carts to all Portland households between May and July. The roll carts replace the yellow bin recycling system that has been used for 16 years. The City's curbside recycling hotline expected an increase in calls once delivery began. But given that Portlanders are considered to be expert recyclers, hotline staff was a little surprised at the number of calls about whether residents are supposed to put garbage in the shiny new roll carts. "Portlanders want to know how to recycle the right way, and we're doing our best to remind everyone that 1) ga
