Neighborhood Association and Community Alert!

by pearlgirl
School Bus - Cartoon 7 Portland Public Schools is planning to change their policy concerning the disposition of real property. They are planning to discontinue the notification of the City of Portland, Multnomah County, Portland neighborhoods, and the public when they are planning to declare a property surplus /(see pages 8 - 15 of PPS Final Board Book ). The 1979 Portland City School Policy was developed during the comprehensive plan process and is still ORDINANCE (Ordinance 150580). It states very clearly the intent and importance of a public partnership among School District #1, local government, neighborhoods, and the public. The above policy changes by PPS #1 seem to be in conflict with the City School Policy, Comp Plan and State Law. If you are able, please check into this policy change and let Portland Public Schools know of your opinion about the need for the public to remain part of this process and tell others about it. Thank you very much for any help you can offer, Don MacGillivray<

Publicly Funded Stadium for Beavers in This Economy?

by shooter
portland beavers I like the idea of the Beavers in Lents.  I think it would be good for Lents and East Portland.  A project like this, however, is never simple and many things need to be considered. Via Willamette Week , via Bojack , I read this article from The Nation that criticizes Merritt Paulson's request for $85 million in public funds to build a new stadium for the Beavers and upgrade PGE Park.  As you may know, Merritt owns 80% of the Beavers and Timbers.  He is also the son of Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, who owns the remaining 20% of these franchises. The Nation's story asks a serious question, should public money be used for this project given the current economic woes and budget constraints on the city, and given that the owners of the franchise are extremely wealthy?  Tell us what you think?

Former Mortgage Broker’s Home Takes The Prize For “Most Desperate Seller”

by Agent503
Mt Tabor Home Not too long ago this prestigious 7000 sq. ft, 6-bedroom Mt. Tabor home was included in the National Register of Historical Places. It is now bank-owned and has become the mockery of several Portland real estate blogs. The property went on the market in May 2007 for 1.8M. Fifteen months later it is now priced at 899k, a whopping 53% less - the biggest drop among the 160 properties tracked in Portland's Desperate Sellers Database. The bank took over this property when the owner, a local mortgage broker, was unable to...uhmm...meet his obligations. If that ain’t a sign of the times…

Find out more about this month's real estate activity and other Desperate Sellers here .

Portland Voted Greenest City In The U.S.

by Agent503
green-recycle-img According to a ranking by SustainLane, Portland is the greenest city in the nation. The rankings track the unfolding story of cities working to improve their residents’ quality of life. Cities with decentralized energy supplies, renewable water sources, abundant mass transit etc score high. Green building and land use policies also play an important role in determining who's green and who's not. Portland's placing at the top may not come as a surprise to many, but the city may not be as green as it's made out to be. Find out more here . The median sale price for August 2008 was $280,000 this is a 7.3% decrease from the median sale price for August 2007 and marks the biggest year-over-year decline since at least 1996. Neighbors, Please Help Keep Colwood Green!

by pearlgirl
colwood Hello Neighbors, I have let you know about this issue in the past—and you may have already received this request from me or others, I am sorry for any redundancy—but the Concordia Neighborhood Association and many other neighborhood and environmental groups have been working on a critical issue and we need your assistance. There is a proposal before Council to rezone of 116 acres of the Colwood Golf Course from open space to industrial. You can read the details at http://keepcolwoodgreen.com This rezone requires an amendment to the City's Comprehensive Plan and the folks in favor of the rezone are pushing their case very hard. They have hired former Commissioner Mike Lindberg, among others, to lobby the Portland Council on their behalf. This makes it critical that we let our voices be heard on this issue. Here is a quick run down of the main reasons to keep Colwood green: 1) Colwood is an irreplaceable asset: Colwood is one of the last parts of the Columbia

The Beavers Moving to Lents? The Devil is in the Details

by shooter
lents-logo Based on the number of comments on our post about the Portland Beavers in Lents, there is a lot of interest in the idea of the Beavers moving to Lents. As you can guess, not everyone is happy about it. This article in the Tribune gives both sides of the story.

What's most important is that residents of Lents get involved with the neighborhood association and make sure your voice is heard. This is a big change for any neighborhood. At first glance it would appear to be a wonderful thing for Lents, but the devil is in the details. Get involved, understand what is being proposed, and express your opinion or concerns.

The only way to have a proposal like this work for the community is for the community to get involved and make sure its needs are met!

Go to the Lents Neighborhood Association website for more information.

The association has formed a subcommittee that meets every other Thursday. The next meeting is Aug. 21, 6PM at
