Portland Makes NYT List of 31 Summer Stops
by pearlgirl
The New York Times has named 31 interesting places to visit this summer. Portland made the list as a foodie haven: "As far as foodie havens go, Portland has been better known for its vegan cafes and eco-hippie cooperatives than for restaurants with gastronomic ambitions. But an emerging locavore movement has changed that. Drawn by the city’s low rents and artsy vibe, young chefs are breaking the culinary mold and tapping into the Northwestern bounty of local fisheries, small meat purveyors and artisanal farms. Sample the heat at places like Clyde Common (Southwest 10th and Stark; 503-228-3333; www.clydecommon.com ), which serves novel dishes like crispy pork belly with blood orange marmalade." Contractors wield fast nail guns in Habitat 'blitz build'
by pearlgirl
Hooray for partnerships that produce results. Five low-income families (their annual income is between $20,000-$40,000) will receive new homes in Lents. It's possible because businesses, organizations and the families are working together to supply the materials and manpower the project requires. Kudos to everyone involved! From the Portland Tribune... You know that feeling you get watching “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” and seeing how excited the family is when that big new house is revealed on national television? That’s how Sam Portesi expects to feel some time next week. And he won’t have to shout, “Move that bus!” Portesi is part of a Habitat for Humanity “blitz build” project constructing five new homes in the Lents neighborhood for Portland-area low-income families. He is with Buena Vista Custom Homes of Lake Oswego, one of five builders taking part in the Portland project. Work began early Friday morning on the five h

Development has been proposed in Lents at 9800 SE Mt. Scott Blvd requiring a land use review. The applicant proposes to subdivide the 5.7-acre site into one parcel and a 3.6-acre Environmental Tract. Parcel 1 will include a 2.1-acre multi-dwelling development of 26 units in 4 buildings. A Planned Development review is needed for creating 26 condominium units and a community center on Parcel 1; to increase the maximum allowed lot area in the R7 zone from 12,000 to 91,911 square feet; and to increase the maximum allowed building coverage from 9,893 to 20,500 square feet. The site is in the Environmental Conservation and Environmental Protection overlay zones. The proposal exceeds maximum distrubance area standards and must be approved through Environmental Review. Foster forges a new identity
by pearlgirl
When Rob Hergenrader opened his Mocha Master coffee shop on Foster Road six years ago, he could tell some of his customers were hooked on meth.It wasn’t a very good neighborhood, Hergenrader recalled, with “a lot of meth and theft and graffiti.”
From the Portland Tribune... But in the past couple of years, it seems, the meth addicts along Foster have been replaced by caffeine addicts.
Oh, sure, there are still several windowless, smoky taverns along Foster between Southeast 50th and 90th. There’s still a pawnshop, a “Gentlemen’s Club,” an adult video store and a cocktail bar offering “stripper karaoke” on Sundays. You can still shop for guns and beer-logo mirrors on Foster.
But there’s an unmistakable transition under way in what has long been one of Portland’s seediest commercial arteries.
Cava, which opened in October, may be the first Foster Road restaurant to attrac
