Trick or Vote!

by souk
TorVlogo Halloween is the one day each year we culturally expect a knock on the door and it also always falls just days before the election. You may be too old to trick-or-treat, but you're never too old to trick-or-vote. Studies show that face-to-face contact is the most effective method to boost voter turnout—increasing participation by as much as 8–12%.

Trick or Vote is the nation's largest non-partisan get-out-the-vote canvass hits the streets … in costume

"Trick or Vote" is the effort of a coalition working to make targeted voter contacts in urban areas on Halloween. Just 4 days before the election, costumed volunteers will canvass low-turnout, youth-dense precincts to remind people to vote, distribute nonpartisan voter guides, and generate both grassroots and media awareness of Election Day.

Looking for a New Best Friend? Check Out Oregon Dog Rescue!

by pearlgirl

Meet Latka My name is Latka and I'm a male German Shepherd. The shelter picked me up because I was a stray. I can be aloof with strangers at first but once I know you I am the best companion in the world! I weigh 72 lbs and I'm approx. 2 1⁄2 years old. No cats please. My adoption fee is $150. We will be at a special event Saturday, August 9th, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Tualatin Crawfish festival located at Tualatin Community Park near the intersection of Boones Ferry Rd. and Tualatin Rd. Visit Oregon Dog Rescue for more information on Latka.   Cats Aren't the Only Ones with Nine Lives There's another side of the animal adoption process that most of us never see—rescue and rehabilitation. Thanks to organizations such as Oregon Dog Rescue, we see the end result: a healthy dog in need of a good home. We don't see the lives these dogs led prior to their rescue. Some come from puppy mills, others are strays, and many others are from owners w

Portland Water Bureau Says, "Bring it On!" to Red Cross Blog, Blog-Off Challenge

by jenniferd
As "Blogmistress" to the city's famed Portland Water Bureau, Water Blog , I get a lot of interesting things coming through my office -- but I must say, the most interesting suggestion yet showed up in my inbox last week -- A Blog-Off, presented to the Water Blog by the local Red Cross Blog . Fearing that Water Bureau Administrator David Shaff would laugh me out of his office, I meekly presented this idea to him, because quite frankly, I thought it was pretty durn cool. Much to my delight, he agreed and even liked the idea, blessing me to go forth and blog prosper. So, beginning August 18th, Blog-Off 2008 will ensue between our two blogs. I couldn't be more excited because to be quite honest, we take blogging and The Water Blog pretty seriously around here. Though I do try to keep the Water Blog light, there is some super important information that I post on there. I know that the Red Cross Blog also posts really important stuff -- so it's mandatory for both of our blog
