Notes of Interest » December 18, 2008

m&b-superfund Here is our daily list of interesting links. One of the stories is about land that University of Portland has purchased. I believe the land is the McCormick & Baxter Creosote Plant superfund site.  It has been a great site for photography, and most recently even used as a small skateboard park.  I guess it's good the land will be used, but it's a great example of urban decay and I'll hate to see that go.

What it means to live in a "green" home

by TeachStreet
TS_Tree The Moon brothers, Garrett and Dustin, of Southeast Portland have decided to go green.  It turns out that the new home they're building is already exceeding the standards for " green design " set by the Cascadia Region Green Building Council ("CRGBC").  The council was set up to establish and monitor green building standards on the West Coast and Pacific Northwest.

To date, no new development has achieved all the rigorous standards set by the CRGBC in one design.  The Moon's believe they are a shoe in to being the first to build a fully green home .

The Living Building Challenge is a program developed by the CRGBC. The Moon's have entered the challenge which requires designers’ buildings be 100% supplied by on-site renewable sources.  The challenge covers “six petals”:

Take the Streetcar Survey

by Trace
streetcar The Portland Office of Transportation (PDOT) is currently drafting a Streetcar System Plan, with the intent of creating a citywide network. The purpose of the Streetcar System Plan (SSP) District Working Group process that is currently underway is to engage the public in the beginning of a long-range planning effort that will identify future streetcar corridors with the highest potential in a long-term implementation strategy. Specifically, the goal of the NE District Working Group process is to identify where community support for potential streetcar corridors is located in NE Portland. Currently, volunteers like us are doing community outreach to gauge the level of support in Northeast Portland along various corridors such as Broadway/Weidler, MLK Blvd, Alberta St, and 82nd Ave. The city has stated that new streetcar corridors will be prioritized in areas where community support exists.

Clinton Condos near completion

by shooter
clinton-condos It seems that the Clinton Condominium project was one that worked, even in a down time. It is a strong start to have both ground level retail leased out and 2/3 of the units sold. We also hear good things about Little T American Baker.
