Sisters of the Road's Annual MLK March and Celebration
by pearlgirl
Monday, January 19th, Sisters Of The Road in partnership with Oregon Action invites everyone to join them for a Martin Luther King Jr. Day march and celebration. The event kicks off Sisters' 30th year of service to Portland, and their coming work in 2009 to restore civil liberties to the community by repealing the Sit/Lie ordinance. The theme of this year's march is Martin Luther King Jr.'s Poor People's Campaign, which he launched in 1968 to address issues of economic justice and demand economic aid to the poorest communities of the United States. This MLK Day will also be on the eve of the inauguration of a new US President, a fitting time to remember Dr. King's work for Economic Human Rights. This is a permitted march and family-friendly event. Details are as follows: 2pm - Monday January 19th, 2008 - Gather at Sisters Of The Road (133 NW 6th Ave); enjoy some snacks. 3pm - The march begins and heads toward St. Mary's Academy at 1615 SW 5th Ave. 3:30pm - Program begins at St. M

Achieve Your Fitness Resolution For 2009
by TeachStreet
How many years have gone by where your New Year's resolution was to exercise and get in shape , but by the end of the year you've found yourself having to renew that promise? If you aren't a hardcore athlete , and don't plan to be, then yoga lessons may be the genie in a bottle that makes your New Year's wishes come true in 2009.

Especially if you have prior joint and bone injuries, doing plyometrics, weightlifting and running on a treadmill can put a lot of strain on your vulnerable body parts. The non-abrasive, body flexing, joint strengthening art of yoga is just what the doctor orders. The dual benefit of yoga over many other forms of exercises is that it is a powerful mental discipline as well. Yoga means union, which through my interpretation is the union of the mind and body. Practicing meditation has many great health benefits beyond the physical, as many doctors claim.&

City of Portland employees exhibit generous spirit this holiday season
by jenniferd
Commissioner Randy Leonard challenged two of the bureaus he oversees to do something different this holiday season. He didn't challenge them to boost morale or work harder during these stressful economic times. Leonard challenged the Portland Water Bureau and the city's Bureau of Development Services to a friendly holiday competition; a competition to fill barrels for the needy. The Water Bureau allied with Portland Fire and Rescue's Toy N Joy Makers program to fill toy barrels. The Bureau of Development Services picked Sunshine Barrels, a food donation program headed up by the Portland Police Bureau. The competition began on December 3 and ended this afternoon. The prize? Not much, really - a hearty congratulation from the Commissioner and bragging rights, of course. Fancy prize or not, however, city employees embraced this competition with a stunning amount of voracity and enthusiasm, especially given the rough state of the economy. The Water Bureau sent 53 barrels off with firef

Multnomah electronic recycling project underway
by TeachStreet
This holiday season, as you head out to the market to buy ingredients to prepare a holiday meal or bake cookies for you know who, think about recycling your old electronic goodies in preparation for the new ones you may receive as gifts. The materials that make up your electronic gadgets are often times toxic, therefore Multnomah County is offering its residents an alternative option for discarding their toxic trash. You can recycle your old cell phones, PDAs, MP3 players, chargers and Bluetooth headsets into one of the free recycling bins at 11 locations across the county . You can find the drop boxes at libraries and other county buildings.

The program was started by Commissioner Jeff Cogen last month in anticipation of the coming holiday season. The Environment Protection Agency predicts that we recycle only 20% of old cell phones, and that we hold onto 130 million unused phones.

Food Drive Update + Engaging Children
by nancy
The Sunshine Division Food Drive in central Portland has taken off thanks to the passion and persistence of our parent volunteers. We first posted information about the drive on December 1st. Already 16 buildings have bins in their lobbies, and the Gregory is already on their second bin! Kudos to Gregory residents for their generosity. We've had great conversations with parents and grandparents about how to include children in the giving. At the November Family Conversations , a major theme was 'teaching our children about donating, generosity and giving'. Let's share ideas about how to teach our kids... Here are some of the ideas I've heard for engaging children in the Food Drive. This is not an exhaustive list - please share your ideas and suggestions. Children can pick out cans of food as part of weekly grocery shopping Children can check on the bins each day to see the new donated items Children can compare pric

What it means to live in a "green" home
by TeachStreet
The Moon brothers, Garrett and Dustin, of Southeast Portland have decided to go green. It turns out that the new home they're building is already exceeding the standards for " green design " set by the Cascadia Region Green Building Council ("CRGBC"). The council was set up to establish and monitor green building standards on the West Coast and Pacific Northwest. To date, no new development has achieved all the rigorous standards set by the CRGBC in one design. The Moon's believe they are a shoe in to being the first to build a fully green home .

Tutors, Mentors Needed
by Trace
The Youth Employment Institute is a nonprofit organization in Northeast Portland that provides education, employment and personal development programs for youth. One of our main services is our GED Preparation program which focuses on GED attainment in an alternative school setting. We also provide specialized services for young parents, which include case management services, parenting education and an onsite child care center. Additionally, we offer paid and unpaid work experiences, job readiness training and gang prevention services to the youth in our programs. There are a number of ways community members can get involved in our programs: Academic tutors work with the youth in our GED program. Tutors come in once or twice a week during the school day to tutor youth one-on-one in either writing or math. Mentors work with youth in our young parents program. Members of the business community provide job tours and / or job shadowing experiences in
