m&b-superfund Here is our daily list of interesting links. One of the stories is about land that University of Portland has purchased. I believe the land is the McCormick & Baxter Creosote Plant superfund site.  It has been a great site for photography, and most recently even used as a small skateboard park.  I guess it's good the land will be used, but it's a great example of urban decay and I'll hate to see that go.

Clinton Street Bicycle Boulevard Enhancement Safety Project

by pearlgirl
bike The Clinton Street Bicycle Boulevard Enhancement Project is a recently launched pilot project that will seek to test a range of new bold on-street markings, signage, and other elements along the Clinton Street bicycle boulevard. The project aims to communicate the street's designation as a bicycle boulevard to all users of the street. A bicycle boulevard is defined under Portland City Code Title 16 as a "low traffic route prioritized for the use of bicycles." According to project coordinator Kirsty Hall, many new cyclists do not know where the safe, low-traffic bicycle routes in Portland exist for them to ride on. They may unwittingly ride on more major arterials that lack good bicycle facilities. Conversely, too many motorists currently drive on Portland's bicycle boulevard network because bold, visible bicycle signage is not there to inform them of the likely presence of bicyclists. Such signage would indicate to motorists that they should consider either finding a more

Yard Sign 101

by pearlgirl
yard-signs Have you ever wondered how to get one of the yard signs that asks for motor vehicles to slow down for kids, pedestrians, or bikes? After a little digging, the Stephens Street Neighborhood Watch Group was able to find the answer to this question. Thanks to Steve Huckins and the entire Stephens Street crew for sharing this information with all of us. Together, we can do more—better! Yard Sign Lender Program The City of Portland Office of Transportation has yard signs available for residents to "borrow" for as long of a period of time as they are interested. Each sign features a black steel "A" frame along with a 18"h x 24"w PVC sign. The signs, attached by independent clips, hang freely from the steel "A" frame and move in the breeze. The Office of Transportation yard signs are portable and suitable for quick and easy display by residents in their yards. Signs should be brought indoors each evening, if possible, to minimize vandal

BIKE BOX DESIGN Study In Portland Neighborhoods

by pearlgirl
bike_box The Portland Office of Transportation (PDOT) announced that City Council accepted an update to the "Bicycle Safety: Bike Box and Alternatives Report" that modifies implementation of the project at two locations to better evaluate the effectiveness of Portland's innovative design of the bike box - a safety treatment to reduce bicycle/motorist crashes and save lives. Consistent with Federal Highway Administration approval for experimentation, PDOT will be phasing in the green color of the bike box traffic control safety treatment at NW Broadway at Hoyt, SE Clinton at 39th Ave and SW Terwilliger Blvd at Taylors Ferry Rd in both directions. This will allow the City to collect data that helps determine the relative effectiveness of the green color as part of the overall safety treatment. After a short period of time to collect evaluation data, the green color will be added, similar to the eight locations citywide which received the treatment this past spring. While used internati

Traffic Plan for Bridge Pedal

by pearlgirl
pbp-poster The 13th annual Providence Bridge Pedal on Sunday morning, August 10, will involve nine Willamette River bridges in Portland. The event includes three different cycle routes and one for walkers. As usual, the event will require some changes in how motorists get around the city, especially when crossing the Willamette River. Several bridges - including the Burnside, Morrison, and St. Johns - will remain open to vehicular traffic in both directions, despite the presence of cyclists and walkers. Here is the traffic plan for Bridge Pedal, starting with bridges from south to north: The Sellwood Bridge will be closed westbound from 6 am to 9 am. The Ross Island Bridge will be closed westbound at 5 am and will reopen by noon. The Marquam Bridge/Interstate 5 will be closed northbound (upper deck) from 2 a.m. to noon. The Hawthorne Bridge will be closed eastbound from 6 am to 10:15 am, with TriMet bus service operating in both directions. The outside eastbound lane will be closed be

bridge pedal 2008 Expect 15-minute delays downtown The 13th annual Providence Bridge Pedal on Sunday morning, August 10, will involve nine Willamette River bridges in Portland. The event includes three different cycle routes and one for walkers. As usual, the event will require some changes in how motorists get around the city, especially when crossing the Willamette River. Several bridges—including the Burnside, Morrison and St. Johns—will remain open to vehicular traffic in both directions, despite the presence of cyclists and walkers. TriMet buses and MAX trains may experience delays up to 15 minutes in downtown during the event. Buses are being routed off the Broadway Bridge for the event and the Steel Bridge is closed to all vehicular traffic because of construction. Buses that regularly use these bridges are being rerouted to the Burnside, Morrison and Hawthorne bridges. Read TriMet's full press release .
