***IMPORTANT*** Winter Tips from the Portland Water Bureau

by jenniferd
Coldweather Okay kiddies -- here's the scoop: the weather is cold, cold, freezing cold. You need to protect your plumbing or you could end up with a miserable, watery situation on your hands....please just trust me on this one! I've seen it too many times. No one wants frozen and/or exploding plumbing in the middle of a snowstorm. It's just not fun. Outside Plumbing Caulk around pipes where they enter the house. Close all foundation vents. Cut wood or Styrofoam blocks to fill vent openings, then slide them into the vents. (You'll want to open the vents again in the spring to prevent dry rot.) Protect outside pipes and faucets. If you have a separate shut off valve for an outside faucet, consider shutting it off and draining it for the winter. If you don't have a separate valve to turn off faucets, you can wrap outside faucets or hose bibs with insulation . Use newspaper or rags covered with plastic, fiberglass or molded foam-insulating covers (available at hardware stores) to

How to Make the Perfect Bow and Add Dazzle to Your Holiday Gifts

by pearlgirl
bow-how-to-018 Some folks are lucky enough to get the gift-wrapping gene: the ability to make any gift, large or small, even more beautiful by packaging it with care, thought and consideration. I'm not one of those people. I can't even close a bag of coffee in a presentable fashion—it's always a wee bit mangled. Fortunately for me, and for those of you like me, there are *chuckle, chuckle, snort* gifted individuals available to help with our gift wrapping needs. This year, with the economy being what it is, there are too few dollars to spend on luxuries like gift wrapping services. We're all giving fewer gifts, but there's no reason that they can't be more meaningful inside and out. With a little practice, even the most craft-impaired person can learn to make the perfect holiday bow. Your friends and family will love the results!   What you'll need: 5–7 yards of ribbon (length depends on size of box and how fluffy you'd like your bow), scissors

Home Office » Seven Tips to Increase Productivity

by pearlgirl
defteling-primary Everyone loves the idea of working from home. Although the thought of setting your own hours, working in your PJ's, having the world's best boss and eliminating that pesky commute is incredibly alluring—the reality is that working at home is incredibly difficult. Get in the Zone First things first: It's important to do a little checking and make sure that your home office meets local zoning requirements. There are reasons for residential and commercial zoning—it's not always possible to run your business out of your home. Your business can impact the traffic, parking and livability of your neighborhood. An upset neighbor, Homeowners Association or Neighborhood Association will definitely dampen your productivity. In Portland, the City recognizes two types of businesses that are suitable for residential zones: • Type A . A Type A home occupation is one where residents use their home as a place of work; however, no employees or customers/clients come to the

Crafty Kids in Central Portland

by nancy
fish We’re having a crafty summer. There’s really no other way to describe it. We’ve been sewing, painting, raiding the recycling bins to make marble tracks. Making strawberry tarts and home made pasta. Lots of working with our hands. Lots of messes in the house. Which prompted me to look online to see what options there were to mess up other people’s spaces. DIY Alert!  may just save our bacon by, well, alerting us to day camps, week-long camps and afternoon sessions for kids. This website bills itself as a 'one-stop calendar for craft events, craft classes, and craft groups in Portland, Oregon and surrounding areas. Just reading through the calendar will inspire you, and they also offer a weekly email. Their calendar highlights some fun kid events over the summer, including woodworking, mixed media camps, book making, youth fashion design camp, and fiber art camp. The calendar is easy to use, with clear identificat
