2008 at Isobel's Clubhouse

by nancy
Isobels_Clubhouse Grateful. Joyful. Humble. Just a few of my feelings as I compiled a set of  photos from our year at Isobel's Clubhouse . Isobel's Clubhouse  is a dream come true, a collaboration between families, donors and a community that believes that children are good for the central city, and the central city is good for kids.  The  look on Joan's face  the day  Zimmerman Community Center  signed the lease and got the keys says it all. For those who don't know her, Joan is a ZCC board member as well as Chair of the  Pearl District Neighborhood Association . Like many other adults in our community she has long advocated for a community center, and for the resources families need to thrive in central Portland.  Isobel's Clubhouse is a small (490 square feet) but significant (220 families and growing) step toward these long held goals. And it has a lot of love from the community. Gun and Tom Denhart donated the space. ZCC signed the lease

Thank You Isabel Pearl

by nancy
IMG_0982 Thank you  Isabel Pearl  for hosting a fun and delicious Cookie Decorating Party for families in Central Portland.  Our generous hostess, Isabel Cruz, thought of everything. Hot cocoa, grilled cheese sandwiches and noodles for the kids. And sangria, pulled pork tacos and savory tofu for the adults. Oh, and let's not forget the cookies. Fresh from the oven, in holiday shapes with so many icings and candies that it was hard for a kid to choose where to start. After the sugar rush hit, a few hardy adults followed the kids out into the courtyard to run and play tag in the cold.    It was a wonderful party, in a lovely setting, with great food and a very gracious hostess. Thank you Isabel Pearl! Here are some fun photos from our  flickr page . Enjoy!

CHAP's Holiday Bizarre Ends Today

by shooter
chaps-holiday-primary Children's Healing Art Project's (CHAP) Holiday Bizarre comes to a close today.  We've been fortunate to work with CHAP over the last year and think what they do for kids is nothing short of AMAZING !  If you'd like to learn more about CHAP visit their website .

I recently visited their Holiday Bizarre and thought I'd share photos from that visit.  The Washington School for the Blind was visiting that day and KGW was doing a live broadcast. 937 Building deserves a big thank you for providing the chaps for CHAP's Hliday Bizarre.  If you get the chance, stop by today before 7pm, 937 NW Glisan. ***Update*** Look for CHAP to relocate to the Metropolitan in the New Year.  Hoyt Street Properties has agreed to provide the space on NW 11th and Marshall to CHAP.  Kudos to HSP for supporting such a great organizatio!

City of Portland employees exhibit generous spirit this holiday season

by jenniferd
2008 Toy Drive Dump Truck Commissioner Randy Leonard challenged two of the bureaus he oversees to do something different this holiday season. He didn't challenge them to boost morale or work harder during these stressful economic times. Leonard challenged the Portland Water Bureau and the city's Bureau of Development Services to a friendly holiday competition; a competition to fill barrels for the needy. The Water Bureau allied with Portland Fire and Rescue's Toy N Joy Makers program to fill toy barrels. The Bureau of Development Services picked Sunshine Barrels, a food donation program headed up by the Portland Police Bureau. The competition began on December 3 and ended this afternoon. The prize? Not much, really - a hearty congratulation from the Commissioner and bragging rights, of course. Fancy prize or not, however, city employees embraced this competition with a stunning amount of voracity and enthusiasm, especially given the rough state of the economy. The Water Bureau sent 53 barrels off with firef

Cupcake Jones Did It Again

by nancy
IMG_0918 Cupcake Jones  braved the ice and snow on Wednesday to share scrumptious cupcakes, fresh frosting and fondant cutout trees and stockings with  Isobel's Clubhouse .  It was a long, cold walk, uphill both ways, but the intrepid staff gave it their all to bring joy and chocolate. Children and their families frosted cupcakes, ate icing and played indoors together on a cold winter day.  Thank you Cupcake Jones for your ongoing generosity to the clubhouse and families. We have some fun photos on our  flickr page .  Love the stylish winter gear sported by the kids.

Tight Times

by Librarian Kate
Home_Photo_books "Libraries will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no libraries." Library use is up around the country. Here in Multnomah County alone more books, movies, and music are being checked out than a year ago. Haven't discovered your local library yet? Here are a few reasons libraries can help in tough economic times: FREE books, movies, and music to check out. FREE magazines and newspapers to read at the library. FREE programs. Join a book discussion group, listen to music, learn about different cultures, attend storytime with your child, or learn a new skill. Visit Multnomah County Library's events page for details. FREE resources for your business-tips and information for small businesses, websites and databases, and grant information. FREE resources for your job search-test prep, job hunting and resume books, and local and national job listings. FREE internet including WiFi. Did I mention that all of this

Food Drive Update + Engaging Children

by nancy
sunshine The  Sunshine Division  Food Drive in central Portland has taken off thanks to the passion and persistence of our parent volunteers.  We  first posted information  about the drive on December 1st. Already 16 buildings have bins in their lobbies, and the Gregory is already on their second bin! Kudos to Gregory residents for their generosity.  We've had great conversations with parents and grandparents about how to include children in the giving. At the November  Family Conversations , a major theme was 'teaching our children about donating, generosity and giving'.  Let's share ideas about how to teach our kids... Here are some of the ideas I've heard for engaging children in the Food Drive. This is not an exhaustive list - please share your ideas and suggestions.  Children can pick out cans of food as part of weekly grocery shopping Children can check on the bins each day to see the new donated items  Children can compare pric

BodyVox Holiday Dance Days -For Kids

by renee
cyrus Holiday Dance classes are back!!! This year is bigger and better than ever. Last year, if you recall, it was just me and the kids (ages 4-7). This year, we have classes for ages 3 all the way through teens, and I get a chance to work with an amazing group of teahers: Sarah, Ramman, Lauren, and Kara—all dance teachers that I know you will love as much as I do when you and your kids are in class. Holiday Dance Days will be held at our current studio (we hope to be moving to the new one soon), above Bridgeport Brewery, at 1300 NW Northrup. December 22,23, 29, and 30, 9-4 pm. Check out all the details with class decriptions, teachers, times and more at our website . I'll see you and your always-excited, energy-infused, amazing and talented kiddos in the studio to run off some off that holiday steam (and if you sign 'em up for two classes in a row, that gives you 2 hours to enjoy your tasty salad at Bridgeport, a coffee at Via Delizia, or add to your wardrobe at Physical Element
