2008 at Isobel's Clubhouse
by nancy
Grateful. Joyful. Humble. Just a few of my feelings as I compiled a set of photos from our year at Isobel's Clubhouse . Isobel's Clubhouse is a dream come true, a collaboration between families, donors and a community that believes that children are good for the central city, and the central city is good for kids. The look on Joan's face the day Zimmerman Community Center signed the lease and got the keys says it all. For those who don't know her, Joan is a ZCC board member as well as Chair of the Pearl District Neighborhood Association . Like many other adults in our community she has long advocated for a community center, and for the resources families need to thrive in central Portland. Isobel's Clubhouse is a small (490 square feet) but significant (220 families and growing) step toward these long held goals. And it has a lot of love from the community. Gun and Tom Denhart donated the space. ZCC signed the lease

Children's Healing Art Project's (CHAP) Holiday Bizarre comes to a close today. We've been fortunate to work with CHAP over the last year and think what they do for kids is nothing short of AMAZING ! If you'd like to learn more about CHAP visit their website .I recently visited their Holiday Bizarre and thought I'd share photos from that visit. The Washington School for the Blind was visiting that day and KGW was doing a live broadcast. 937 Building deserves a big thank you for providing the chaps for CHAP's Hliday Bizarre. If you get the chance, stop by today before 7pm, 937 NW Glisan. ***Update*** Look for CHAP to relocate to the Metropolitan in the New Year. City of Portland employees exhibit generous spirit this holiday season
by jenniferd
Commissioner Randy Leonard challenged two of the bureaus he oversees to do something different this holiday season. He didn't challenge them to boost morale or work harder during these stressful economic times. Leonard challenged the Portland Water Bureau and the city's Bureau of Development Services to a friendly holiday competition; a competition to fill barrels for the needy. The Water Bureau allied with Portland Fire and Rescue's Toy N Joy Makers program to fill toy barrels. The Bureau of Development Services picked Sunshine Barrels, a food donation program headed up by the Portland Police Bureau. The competition began on December 3 and ended this afternoon. The prize? Not much, really - a hearty congratulation from the Commissioner and bragging rights, of course. Fancy prize or not, however, city employees embraced this competition with a stunning amount of voracity and enthusiasm, especially given the rough state of the economy. The Water Bureau sent 53 barrels off with firef

Here in Multnomah County alone more books, movies, and music are being checked out than a year ago. Haven't discovered your local library yet? Food Drive Update + Engaging Children
by nancy
The Sunshine Division Food Drive in central Portland has taken off thanks to the passion and persistence of our parent volunteers. We first posted information about the drive on December 1st. Already 16 buildings have bins in their lobbies, and the Gregory is already on their second bin! Kudos to Gregory residents for their generosity. We've had great conversations with parents and grandparents about how to include children in the giving. At the November Family Conversations , a major theme was 'teaching our children about donating, generosity and giving'. Let's share ideas about how to teach our kids... Here are some of the ideas I've heard for engaging children in the Food Drive. This is not an exhaustive list - please share your ideas and suggestions. Children can pick out cans of food as part of weekly grocery shopping Children can check on the bins each day to see the new donated items Children can compare pric

BodyVox Holiday Dance Days -For Kids
by renee
Holiday Dance classes are back!!! This year is bigger and better than ever. Last year, if you recall, it was just me and the kids (ages 4-7). This year, we have classes for ages 3 all the way through teens, and I get a chance to work with an amazing group of teahers: Sarah, Ramman, Lauren, and Kara—all dance teachers that I know you will love as much as I do when you and your kids are in class. Holiday Dance Days will be held at our current studio (we hope to be moving to the new one soon), above Bridgeport Brewery, at 1300 NW Northrup. December 22,23, 29, and 30, 9-4 pm. Check out all the details with class decriptions, teachers, times and more at our website . I'll see you and your always-excited, energy-infused, amazing and talented kiddos in the studio to run off some off that holiday steam (and if you sign 'em up for two classes in a row, that gives you 2 hours to enjoy your tasty salad at Bridgeport, a coffee at Via Delizia, or add to your wardrobe at Physical Element
