Technology Versus Civil Liberties in Portland
by shooter
The Portland Police Department is testing a new camera system that automatically records the license plate number, time, and location of vehicles encountered while police are on patrol. The plate number is compared against a database of stolen license plates to help identify and recover stolen vehicles. The system can even track the movements of a vehicle in the city because all the plate numbers recorded are stored in a database.

These systems have been in use in the US for about 5 years, while similar camera systems have been used in Europe for much longer. Police departments who use the system report success with the system, recovering numerous stolen ve

Debunking Urban Legends—Take Email Warnings with a Grain of Salt
by pearlgirl

But it put its foot down on a guerrilla marketing tactic by an online classifieds company: hundreds of 2-by-4-foot chalk ads on the city streets. A city official considers it vandalism." Read the full article Walking the streets of the Pearl with the 'offensive graffiti' painted on the buildings walls, cigarette butts littered all over the streets sidewalks outside some of the local watering holes and the garbage in the streets should we spend time and money worrying about chalk images on the sidewalks? I, personally, think not! Let's have a little more pride in our community and put some effort into keeping the area clean. Just my opinion!
