Hot Off the Press » Jan/Feb 09 Pearl District Newsletter
by pearlgirl
A new year extends an invitation to evaluate our personal health, wealth and happiness. As you contemplate the state of your personal economy, we hope that you will also consider the role you play in the health of the neighborhood. In this issue, we look at ways to improve our personal and neighborhood health. Contributor Michaela Bancud discovers that volunteering is a win-win for personal and community health (p.4). Instructor Alice Peters Diffely demonstrates the finer points of ChiWalking (p.6) and sommelier Timothy Nishimoto gives us advice on how to build community one glass of wine at a time (p.8). Here's to a healthy and happy 2009! Download your copy About the Pearl District Newsletter The Pearl District Newsletter is published six times per year by Neighborhood Notes. 2008 at Isobel's Clubhouse
by nancy
Grateful. Joyful. Humble. Just a few of my feelings as I compiled a set of photos from our year at Isobel's Clubhouse . Isobel's Clubhouse is a dream come true, a collaboration between families, donors and a community that believes that children are good for the central city, and the central city is good for kids. The look on Joan's face the day Zimmerman Community Center signed the lease and got the keys says it all. For those who don't know her, Joan is a ZCC board member as well as Chair of the Pearl District Neighborhood Association . Like many other adults in our community she has long advocated for a community center, and for the resources families need to thrive in central Portland. Isobel's Clubhouse is a small (490 square feet) but significant (220 families and growing) step toward these long held goals. And it has a lot of love from the community. Gun and Tom Denhart donated the space. ZCC signed the lease

Achieve Your Fitness Resolution For 2009
by TeachStreet
How many years have gone by where your New Year's resolution was to exercise and get in shape , but by the end of the year you've found yourself having to renew that promise? If you aren't a hardcore athlete , and don't plan to be, then yoga lessons may be the genie in a bottle that makes your New Year's wishes come true in 2009.

Especially if you have prior joint and bone injuries, doing plyometrics, weightlifting and running on a treadmill can put a lot of strain on your vulnerable body parts. The non-abrasive, body flexing, joint strengthening art of yoga is just what the doctor orders. The dual benefit of yoga over many other forms of exercises is that it is a powerful mental discipline as well. Yoga means union, which through my interpretation is the union of the mind and body. Practicing meditation has many great health benefits beyond the physical, as many doctors claim.&

Neighborhood/Community City Legislative Agenda Gathering
by shooter
A special invitation from Sam Adams... Neighborhood, business, and other community-based organizations play an integral part in assuring community and neighborhood livability. I continue to be committed to working with Portland neighborhoods, businesses, and community organizations to provide services and information to assist in empowering residents to identify and support issues that benefit Portland. One way we can support each others efforts is to explore joint legislative objectives and work together in Salem to achieve positive results. I am inviting you to participate in a meeting, co-sponsored by the City's Offices of Neighborhood Involvement and Government Relations, designed to provide you with information for the upcoming 2009 Legislative Session. The meeting is scheduled for January 6, 2008 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in City Council Chambers. This agenda has been designed to assure active participation from each of you and will include interactive polling to ident

City of Portland employees exhibit generous spirit this holiday season
by jenniferd
Commissioner Randy Leonard challenged two of the bureaus he oversees to do something different this holiday season. He didn't challenge them to boost morale or work harder during these stressful economic times. Leonard challenged the Portland Water Bureau and the city's Bureau of Development Services to a friendly holiday competition; a competition to fill barrels for the needy. The Water Bureau allied with Portland Fire and Rescue's Toy N Joy Makers program to fill toy barrels. The Bureau of Development Services picked Sunshine Barrels, a food donation program headed up by the Portland Police Bureau. The competition began on December 3 and ended this afternoon. The prize? Not much, really - a hearty congratulation from the Commissioner and bragging rights, of course. Fancy prize or not, however, city employees embraced this competition with a stunning amount of voracity and enthusiasm, especially given the rough state of the economy. The Water Bureau sent 53 barrels off with firef

Multnomah electronic recycling project underway
by TeachStreet
This holiday season, as you head out to the market to buy ingredients to prepare a holiday meal or bake cookies for you know who, think about recycling your old electronic goodies in preparation for the new ones you may receive as gifts. The materials that make up your electronic gadgets are often times toxic, therefore Multnomah County is offering its residents an alternative option for discarding their toxic trash. You can recycle your old cell phones, PDAs, MP3 players, chargers and Bluetooth headsets into one of the free recycling bins at 11 locations across the county . You can find the drop boxes at libraries and other county buildings.
Photo: Olivia Bucks | The Oregonian
The program was started by Commissioner Jeff Cogen last month in anticipation of the coming holiday season. The Environment Protection Agency predicts that we recycle only 20% of old cell phones, and that we hold onto 130 million unused phones.

Food Drive Update + Engaging Children
by nancy
The Sunshine Division Food Drive in central Portland has taken off thanks to the passion and persistence of our parent volunteers. We first posted information about the drive on December 1st. Already 16 buildings have bins in their lobbies, and the Gregory is already on their second bin! Kudos to Gregory residents for their generosity. We've had great conversations with parents and grandparents about how to include children in the giving. At the November Family Conversations , a major theme was 'teaching our children about donating, generosity and giving'. Let's share ideas about how to teach our kids... Here are some of the ideas I've heard for engaging children in the Food Drive. This is not an exhaustive list - please share your ideas and suggestions. Children can pick out cans of food as part of weekly grocery shopping Children can check on the bins each day to see the new donated items Children can compare pric

December with Isobel's Clubhouse
by nancy
Families that live, work, learn and play in central Portland have many opportunities to build community and come together this month. We’re grateful to Zimmerman Community Center for funding a Community Organizer and Isobel’s Clubhouse , and to Gun and Tom Denhart for donating the Isobels’ Clubhouse space. And we’re thrilled by the generosity of our friends and neighbors who help organize events for families in central Portland. In December volunteers have already launched a Sunshine Division Food Drive . This idea came out of the November Family Conversations , where ‘teaching our children about donating, volunteering and generosity’ was a major theme. Involving our children in choosing healthy food to put in the distinctive blue bins helps to develop their sense of abundance and generosity. Today Sweet Masterpiece shared their joy of ch
