CHAP's Holiday Bizarre Ends Today

by shooter
chaps-holiday-primary Children's Healing Art Project's (CHAP) Holiday Bizarre comes to a close today.  We've been fortunate to work with CHAP over the last year and think what they do for kids is nothing short of AMAZING !  If you'd like to learn more about CHAP visit their website .

I recently visited their Holiday Bizarre and thought I'd share photos from that visit.  The Washington School for the Blind was visiting that day and KGW was doing a live broadcast. 937 Building deserves a big thank you for providing the chaps for CHAP's Hliday Bizarre.  If you get the chance, stop by today before 7pm, 937 NW Glisan. ***Update*** Look for CHAP to relocate to the Metropolitan in the New Year.  Hoyt Street Properties has agreed to provide the space on NW 11th and Marshall to CHAP.  Kudos to HSP for supporting such a great organizatio!

downtown-bridges Today's links have a definite bridge theme with stories about the Burnside Bridge Head project, the Sellwood Bridge replacement, and a pedestrian bridge in South Portland. We are a city of bridges. The Oregonian talks about the proposed "Made in Oregon" sign change, and Portland Art gives its picks for First Thursday. Last, there's a story about plans to improve the North Macadam area.

Portland Art Museum Shows Integrity

by TeachStreet
TS_Tree Portlanders should be proud to know that the Portland Art Museum has demonstrated its high level of integrity and transparency in regard to the art pieces that it acquires. In September the museum acquired a sculpture of Ganesha Stele that had little historical art record to track its origins with. It is not the kind of art piece you can design after taking a class or two in sculpting, so the museum is not worried about an impostor taking claim. The museum director, Brian Ferriso, said "this is all about transparency". Brian Ferriso is a member of the Association of Art Museum Directors ("AAMD") that was developed as an oversight committee for controversial matters just like these.

The purpose of the AAMD, as stated on their website, is to support its members in increasing the contribution of art museums to society.

Museum of Contemporary Craft Downsizes

by shooter
museum of contemporay craft DK Row at The Oregonian reports that the Museum of Contemporary Craft has announced budget and staff reductions.  Row reports that the reductions are anticipatory.  The museum sees corporate, foundation, and possibly individual grants shrinking in the near future, and wants to keep the institution sustainable as the economy continues into a recession.  More information will be forthcoming.

Plan a visit to the museum and give this great institution your support.

Butterfly wings are causing hurricanes at the Leftbank Project

by CHYCHELE
BUFFALO-HERD-YNP. The leftbank project was fortunate enough to play host to "The Butterfly Effect: A Visionary Gesture by Leslie B. Durst" . A quick google of "butterfly effect" comes up with two answers: 1.) a property of chaotic systems (as the atmosphere) by which small changes in initial conditions can lead to large-scale and unpredictable variation in the future state of the system 2.) an Ashton Kutcher movie about a missing car and how it messed up his universe or his hair or something The first definition is closer to PICA 's hope for their Butterfly Effect. Ten years ago Leslie B. Durst began commissioning twelve pieces of art from a different artist each year and giving them to people all over the world. Some of the recipients were actively involved members of the art community, some were not (this is where the butterfly effect comes into play). To kick off the showing, Cloud Eye Control was on hand to debut their new show "Under Polaris". T

PNCA and OCAC Announce Joint MFA in Applied Craft and Design

by pearlgirl
376 Building on over 200 collective years of art and design education, the city's two oldest art colleges— Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) and the Oregon College of Art and Craft (OCAC) —announced a joint MFA degree that fosters a new, forward-thinking model of art and design education. An historic moment, the creation of the joint MFA bolsters the cooperative and innovative efforts of these two growing institutions by creating a program that offers students opportunities for creative work that fuses craft, design and environmentalism within a rich academic and creative practice. The new joint MFA in Applied Craft and Design celebrates process and tradition, innovation and cultural engagement and is the culmination of feasibility studies by an MFA Task Force consisting of OCAC and PNCA faculty members. The PNCA/OCAC MFA program will accept 15 students in the 2009-2010 school year. "While there has long been a tradition of cooperation among cultural instituti
