Shop Talk – The Paper Station
by alex
I'm not a big fan of air travel (too many people in too small a space with too many bumps and mechanical noises!) but I am a big fan of the Portland airport. It's a nice, manageable size, clean and organized, and best of all, they have some great shops where you can easily kill some time if you're early for a flight or waiting for a loved one to arrive.I especially love The Paper Station – as the name implies they have a great selection of greeting cards and other paper products (I found the cutest graduation card there not too long ago). Office space rental market softens
by shooter
The Oregonian reports that the commercial real estate market in Portland is softening. I wonder what this development means for the off again/on again One Waterfront Place project. I previously posted about One Waterfront Place when the developers presented their latest proposal to the Pearl District Neighborhood Association in early June. At the time co-developer Jim Winkler said, "as soon as we get our anchor tenant who leases 80,000 square feet we'll begin". If the commercial real estate market is softening that doesn't bode well for Winkler to find his anchor tenant. If this development doesn't happen the PDC should pull the plug and use the $9 million committed to the project for something that will be built. I think the office building would be a good addition and would bring more foot traffic to the North Pearl. However, if the project can't get off the ground it should be killed once and for all.

Cupcakes for A Cause
by pearlgirl
Have you heard about Cupcakes for A Cause ? Nooooooooooooooooo, not just cause you want one—it's a fundraiser for kids and teens with cancer. During the week of October 20–26, bakeries from across the country are donating a portion of their proceeds from select cupcakes to CancerCare For Kids . All money raised will be used to support their free counseling services for any child who is affected by a cancer diagnosis—either their own or that of a family member. So why am I telling you this now? Simple. Start working out today and build your cupcake-eating muscle. If you're eating cupcakes for a cause , then you need to practice packing those guys away! Head over to Cupcake Jones and let them know you're eating Cupcakes for a Cause—cause you love 'em and cause you love Peter & Lisa for supporting this great event. Happy training!

FroYo making a comeback?
by shooter
Haven't thought about frozen yogurt since you last listened to, Culture Club , Wham , or Hall & Oats ? Think again, frozen yogurt is getting popular again with the 3 new yogurt shops in town. If you're looking for a cool treat during the few warm days this summer, you might give frozen yogurt a try again. Who knows, you may just listen to Karma Chameleon again. Find out where the new shops are in the Portland Tribune . (Hint: they are in the Pearl, Hosford-Abernethy, and Buckman)

New plan to help Portland Office of Transportation
by shooter
Sam Adams may have shelved the idea of Safe, Sound and Green Streets, but at least he's recommending a way to deal with the Transportation Office budget shortfall. His idea is to dedicate the $4 million a year in unanticipated Utility License Fee revenue increase to the Portland Office of Transportation. While it will not address the backlog of basic service maintenance that is needed, it will prevent the Transportation Office from further cutting services.
