Good Scoop from Cool Moon Ice Cream

by pearlgirl
This just in from the Cool Moon Newswire...

It's been a week of unusual celestial sightings. First came the reports of a UFO in the skies above Texas. Then, in an equally startling event, a strange bright orb was visible in Portland's daytime sky. Through our galactic connections, Cool Moon's intel team was able to confirm that this local phenom was actually the sun making an unseasonable appearance. These unusual events were followed, or accompanied actually, by a spectacular full moon--an event for which we, naturally, take full credit. It has since been confirmed that all these events can be temporally tied to the introduction of a new flavor in the Cool Moon Ice Cream galaxy. "Perseid Meteor Shower" --a velvety dark background of bittersweet chocolate ice cream, flecked with flashes of white chocolate--has become an immediate "star" in the universe of frozen delights.

As life-long Oregonians, we know it is critical, at this time of year, to remind ours

Developer Paul Schlesinger Gets It, Too

by nancy
My goodness, who knew that reading the Oregonian over lunch would result in two quotes about the importance of families in Central Portland?

Here's an excerpt from an Oregonian interview with Paul Schlesinger, recently of Portland's Planning Commission and the Design Commission.

Q. (Anna Griffin)
What are specific things we could be doing to address the big problems facing Portland?

A. (Paul Schlesinger)
Both in public and private, we are losing multimember families, working-class families; they need a three- to four-bedroom condo or apartment. These things do get built in other cities. Let's find a way to build that type of unit so that the person that is looking at 'Do I stay in the core or do I move out?' has something to look at here. So there's a living option in the core area for a family that's affordable.

South Waterfront Gets It

by nancy
The South Portland Neighborhood Association is opposing the plan for a new affordable housing project in the neighborhood. Why? A couple reasons, one of which is that it does not provide affordable places for families.

Land-use committee chairman Mr. Jim Davis is quoted as saying 'We are essentially just a bedroom community with white, relatively wealthy people. How the hell can you have a neighborhood without families, without kids, without schools?'

While you read the rest of the Oregonian article I'm signing off to call Mr. Davis and share our thoughts and efforts on behalf of Central Portland Families.

Family First Sunday: February 3d at 3:00

by nancy
Sunday will be a busy day for families in the River District. There's Family Day at the Portland Art Museum , and Super Bowl parties, and Anansi at Tears of Joy .

We'll be playing with other families in the River District at Jamison Park at 3:00. We hope to see you there.

The theme for February is 'wearing red' and you're also welcome to bring fun Super Bowl gear! And of course, bring a ball to play with.

Some of you have asked how Family First Sundays will be affected by our focus on Central Portland. Great question.

We'd love to see each neighborhood in Central Portland host a Family First Sunday so folks can get to know their neighbors and make connections. Meanwhile, in the River District, we'll continue to host Family First Sunday with a focus on the Pearl and Old Town Chinatown, although all families are welcome.

Five Year Plan to Increase Community Involvement in Portland

by shooter
Entitled "A City for All of Us - More Voices, Better Solutions," Community Connect's final report will be presented to City Council Feb. 27, 2008 at 2 pm. This report contains a five year plan that will strengthen involvement in Portland's neighborhoods and communities, increase the voice of under-represented groups, and invigorate the partnership between community and government.

"Portland has earned a national reputation for its strong tradition of neighborhood involvement and participatory democracy," said Cece Hughley Noel, Executive Director of Southeast Uplift and the chairperson of Community Connect's workgroup. "However, it's been a long time, 30 years, since our community involvement system was first developed. A lot has changed in our city, including increased diversity in the people who make their home here. It's time for an updated vision and a new plan."

Community Connect analyzed the ideas of thousands of Portlanders through two rounds o

Good fundamentals boost rental market

by shooter
Despite the national economy slumping, and city and county taxes threatening to increase, the 2008 multifamily market will see continued improvements to its fundamentals, with high investor demand, increased rents and steady vacancy rates, say Portland analysts. At the annual Hagerman Frick O’Brien investors’ breakfast Wednesday, Portland apartment appraiser Mark Barry said Portland’s multifamily market remains one of the national leaders, along with Seattle and Charlotte, N.C. More than 100 apartment investors came to listen to Barry perform a roundup of last year’s performance and give prognostications about the coming year. Tim Kalberg, an accountant with Perkins & Co., spoke on issues pertaining to the tax implications of donating property. Although the national economic downturn is becoming more pronounced, Barry said he remains optimistic about the Portland multifamily housing market, saying the economy is slumping but the apartment market should still see moderate growt

Food Dude talks about Caffe Umbria

by shooter
Caffè Umbria appeared on the scene a few months ago, with all the flash and glamour you’d expect for a major restaurant opening. Getting through the door and fighting my way through the mob, it was hard to believe all of this fuss was for yet another coffeehouse. This new cafe is in the Casey Building, at the corner of NW 12th and Everett St (Across from Everett St. Bistro). They put a lot of thought into the design and it shows; black granite counters, new glass display cases, both stand up and sit down tables, and high quality fixtures throughout. According to one of the employees, many of the design elements were shipped over from Italy. Every detail has a slick “planned” feel. This is not necessarily a bad thing. It fits the neighborhood, and is the only coffee house I can think of in the Pearl District, that isn’t part of a huge corporate conglomerate. I can’t imagine how much money they spent on the build-out, but rumor on the street, is they are paying upwards of $38 dollars

Vestige of buggy era yielding to apartments

by shooter
One of the last vestiges of Portland's horse-and-buggy era will give way soon to a nine-story apartment building in the Pearl. A Seattle investment team plans to demolish what remains of a former horse stable at Northwest Hoyt Street and Park Avenue. Little remains of the original red-brick stable, and the Portland Historic Landmarks Commission -- usually an aggressive defender of old buildings -- isn't bemoaning its loss. "It's a good replacement for something that none of us is very fond of," Commissioner Richard Engeman says of the redevelopment plan.
