Answering Questions about Hoyt Street Yards Community Association

by shooter
This post is to answer questions from an anonymous reader about the Hoyt Street Yards Community Association (HSYCA). It took a little bit of research on my part to answer these questions because I often get lost in legal language. You can read my original post here .

The original comment: "I would like to attend. I wasn't even sure what this "neighborhood association" is all about. You mean as a condo-owner in a Hoyt building I am paying into this association? Isn't that taxation without representation if no one can show up to the meeting?? Who controls this association? How large is their annual budget? Can we give input in another way if we are not welcome at the annual meeting? Thanks!"

Its not a neighborhood association in the traditional sense. The HSYCA was created by Hoyt Street Properties (HSP) LLC on December 7th, 1998. Its purpose is to maintain and manage the common area of Hoyt Street Yards (owned by the Association), street clean up, supplemental

PNCA vs. Public Market and the Emergence of NW Broadway

by shooter
Portlandarchitecture.com has a pretty good discussion about the 511 building and PNCA vs the Portland Public Market. Be sure to read the comments too.

From portlandarchitecture.com:

It's really a shame: the 511 Building on Northwest Broadway, ideally situated just a few blocks north of Downtown between the Pearl District and Old Town, has undergone a tug of war between two very worthy candidates. First the Portland Public Market somewhat abruptly went for the striking Italian Renaissance structure, abandoning its previous plan to target Union Station. (I never could completely wrap my head around the idea of a public market in a train station anyway.) The Pacific Northwest College of Art then eyed 511 for its rapidly expanding school. When the Portland Development Commission held the reins, it looked like the market might have an inside track. But PNCA smartly targeted the federal government, which owns the building, and now might not only get the building b

Another reason to take the kids downtown

by nancy
Oliver's Downtown is hosting a Holiday Bazaar on December 1st representing over 20 local designers and artists. Potential gifts include one of a kind jewelry, clothing, pet items, toiletries, pottery, and handmade toys. And, while you're there, pick up handmade gift wrap and holiday cards.

Children are welcome - you can shop local and handmade while the kids play in a supervised holiday activity area.

If the kids haven't already seen the holiday tree and other downtown decorations, get off the streetcar a little early and walk up Broadway past Pioneer Courthouse Square.
