Will Baseball strike out in the Pearl?

by pearlgirl
Portland Business Journal
From the December 23, 2005 print edition

Baseball backers eye Coliseum as stadium site

Andy Giegerich
Business Journal staff writer

A group leading the charge to attract a big-league baseball team to Portland wants planners to study another high-profile stadium site.

The Oregon Sports Authority said it wants to analyze the Memorial Coliseum property in Portland's Rose Quarter district to determine whether the site could hold a Major League Baseball stadium. The plot would likely be the smallest plot among the six possible sites studied by city leaders. Kansas City, Mo., stadium design specialist HOK S+V+E could also be brought in to study the site at a later date.

The Kansas City firm analyzed the other potential sites on behalf of the city and local big-league baseball boosters.

In the meantime, Portland Development Commission officials say movement is beginning that could open u

Silent Night

by pearlgirl
For those of you further south, the North Pearl suffered a major blackout on Christmas evening. About 6pm, the emergency generators kicked on as all of our lights went off. I looked at neighboring buildings and saw that Marshall Wells, Streetcar, Bridgeport, Pinnacle and Park Place were also dark. No streetlights or traffic signals either. What an eerie sight.

We took a cab to a movie theater (our garage door wouldn't work), but while we were there, saw friends from a neighboring building. Like us, they altered their plans, but still had a great Christmas. Today, I ran into friends on the street and they said that they ended up lighting candles and playing cards with visiting family. They had a grand time!

Who knew that a blackout could be so fun?

Welcome!

by pearlgirl
I'd like to extend a warm welcome to Ben Andrews and Jeff Hamlin of Willamette Realty Group. They have opened their office at 12th and Hoyt in the space formerly occupied by PDX Gallery. You'll see their website, www.pearldistrictcondos.com on the base of their storefront windows. This particular website is actually really interesting. Ben and Jeff do a great job of keeping it current with useful information about the neighborhood. Stop in and say hello!

Pearl in the media

by pearlgirl
This is an excerpt from Willamette Week's First Annual Super-Deluxe Readers Probe, "an online poll designed to expose some dark, mossy grottos in Portland's collective subconscious."

ATTITUDES

• Call it unreciprocated love: While a majority of suburbanites would consider moving to the central city, 50.4 percent of city dwellers would suburbanize only under penalty of death.

• Surprise! While only 1.7 percent of Probesters say they live in the Pearl District, over 70 percent would at least consider moving there.

• About 70 percent say gentrification "has its perks and downsides"; only 5 percent claim the phenomenon "rocks."

• Is the eastside-westside divide a myth? Nearly three-quarters of Probesters say they have close friends on the opposite side of the Willamette.

• Strip clubs? A landslide 59 percent say, "Hell, yes!"

• Fears that the Northwest is losing its rugged soul may be overblown.

For Sale: Your Cultural Center

by pearlgirl
The Northwest Cultural Center , at the corner of NW 18th and Everett, is owned by the people living in the geographic area of the Northwest Coalition. The Coalition is the umbrella organization over ten neighborhood associations in Northwest Portland. This means as a member of the Pearl District Neighborhood Association you are an owner of this facility.

The future ownership of the building is in play at this time and the membership of the Cultural Center needs to vote to decide to sell the building or not. There is a proposition on the table to sell the building to the Northwest Children's Theater. There is a meeting of the membership on January 10th at 7pm at the Cultural Center (1819 NW Everett) to vote whether to sell the building or not to the Theater.

In order to vote on the proposed sale, you must submit a Membership Application to the office of the Northwest Neighborhood Cultural Center by December 31, 2005, and you must be present at the January 1

Mmmmmmmmmm...Sushi Land

by pearlgirl
A neighbor just told me that Marinepolis Sushi Land will be opening a location in the space formerly occupied by Mobilewerks Furniture. This is on 10th, close to Yoshida's Gallery.

Marinepolis Sushi Land has locations in Seattle and Portland metro. Good sushi at affordable prices served from a conveyor belt. You simply pick what you want from the belt and the plates are priced according to color. It's never boring and provides a quick (and delicious) dining experience.

Sushi Land will be a great addition to the other affordable dining options in the Pearl: Wrapsody, Cha Cha Cha, Madena, Peem Kaew Thai and Daily Cafe. I love that this particular sector of the restaurant market is growing in our neighborhood.

A Cautionary Tale...

by pearlgirl
Do you or one of your neighbors have a storage unit that is not in use? Here's a good reason to buy a padlock and keep it locked, even if it's completely empty:

Recently, a transient discovered an unlocked storage space in a neighborhood condo. He made himself at home there until he was discovered by building staff. Needless to say, he was asked to vacate. Unfortunately, this did not sit well with the transient and he returned at 9:30pm and started a fire in the same storage unit. Fortunately, a resident happened to venture in that area, spotted the smoke and called the fire department.

The water damage from the sprinkler system was greater than the fire itself, but the lesson learned is even more valuable.
