Park Kitchen offers liquor tasting in November

Platter: Food Finds, Restaurant Reviews and Dining Trends

WORD FROM THE SPIRIT WORLD -- "In Portland, beer and wine are king, but spirits are coming up," says Park Kitchen bartender Kevin Ludwig, who plans to stir up the scene with monthly high-end liquor tastings in mid-November.

He's got a point. Oregon's distillery scene is definitely on the move, and exciting new players like Medoyeff vodka from Corvallis are finding followings in the city's best bars. For the past year, forward cocktail creator Lucy Brennan has hosted food-and-spirit dinners at her increasingly ambitious Mint (816 N. Russell St.), including a recent small-batch bourbon collection accompanying the likes of seared rabbit liver and smoked lamb.

Meanwhile, young entrepreneurs are introducing specialty booze to the PBR crowd. Apotheke, a new electronic-indie-Euro lounge (1314 N.W. Glisan St.), serves no cocktails at all

Style news from Relish

by pearlgirl
Greetings!

Now that Autumn is upon us, we take time to reflect on our past efforts and our upcoming endeavors.

As we mentioned previously, we successfully launched our first catalogue campaign, 'Spaces', in late August. The response was terrific and we were pleasantly reminded that we have excited customers all over the world! With that, we are at it again, working on our second catalogue, 'Designer-Makers'. It will feature emerging products and designers, both Portland-based and from all over the world. many are people like you and me that took a leap of faith to start a product, a design or a business. We are certain that you will enjoy what we've come up with!

We intend to drop the second catalogue in late November. If you would like a copy, please send us an email. And while you're at it, check out the PDF version of Spaces (see link on our website) to get a feel for what our catalogues are all about! In the meantime, if you haven't been in the st

More Pearl Press

by pearlgirl
excerpt from CNN article "Peaceful Portland"
October 25, 2005

POWELL'S CITY OF BOOKS
Portland's downtown is populated by a myriad of independent book sellers, video stores and record shops, but none more massive than Powell's City of Books' location in the Pearl District. Located in two converted car dealerships and a printing shop, Powell's warehouse holds more than a million books and takes up a city block. Though I didn't find any myself, I wouldn't be surprised if there are book-carrying skeletons who simply couldn't find their way out of the sprawling, labyrinthine complex.

Ulum Group adds Portland office

by pearlgirl
Portland Business Journal
October 24, 2005

The Ulum Group , a public relations and public affairs firm, has added two staff and opened a new office at 1328 N.W. Kearney St.

The new Pearl District office is a relocation of The Ulum Group's office in Beaverton.

Dianne Danowski Smith will continue as The Ulum Group's Portland director. Annie Klug and Caitlin Gadoua have joined the firm's Portland office as public relations associates.

Growth in The Ulum Group client roster, including health care, consumer, manufacturing, technology, insurance, higher education, business and nonprofit clients prompted the firm to expand to the new space.

Portland is the second location for The Ulum Group, which was founded in 1995 and has headquarters and a 12-person staff in Eugene. Three additional employees are housed in the Portland office.

Esquire names OLEA one of best new restaurants in US

by pearlgirl
Esquire Magazine has released its list of top new restaurants across the US for 2005. Pearl District newcomer, OLEA made the list. Congratulations!

Olea
PORTLAND, OREGON

Upon entering Olea in Portland's bustling Pearl District, I was immediately delighted with its huge industrial windows, big kitchen, and approachable staff—a convivial spot to drop in to for a drink. But when I sat down at a spacious, well-set table in the ninety-seat dining room and started feasting on chef Scott Shampine's food, I knew I had found a winner.

While you could graze here forever on little plates of spiced olives, grilled dates, and arugula-topped focaccia, it's better to go whole hog on Shampine's lusty orecchiette pasta with an oxtail ragout scented with espresso; a lobster tart in truffled cream; sizzling, crisp-skinned, spit-roasted breast of duck with grilled melon, honey, and pistachios; and unremittingly rich braised bacon with green apples, lentils, an

They're HEEEERE!

by pearlgirl
At long last, Fenouil Restaurant is open. Early reviews from neighbors include a range of comments...from "it's fantastic" to "they serve the best hamburger I've EVER had" (Kobe beef and foie gras up the ante). One commonality is that all of the reviews are extremely positive.

Who can argue with a cheese menu???

Fenouil is currently serving dinner, but plans to expand to lunch soon. Call for hours and for reservations.

Another welcome addition to the North Pearl is martini bar Olive or Twist . Located in the retail level of Kearney Plaza Apartments, this welcome newcomer is already attracting "regulars". The interior is sleek and sexy. Lounge on the (room length) banquette or belly up to the substantial bar. Top shelf liquor is not the only thing on display at this hangout...the BP (beautiful people) are definitely on hand.

Olive or Twist is open 3-10pm, M

The Pearl in the Media...

by pearlgirl
Extra Effort
Spacious Olea Spins its Wheels
BY JUSTIN WESCOAT SANDERS
The Mercury

Olea
1338 NW Hoyt
274-0800

Leaning forward to pick up on what my date was saying, it occurred to me that all sensation inside Olea was muted—it took effort just to hear words, to feel the tablecloth, to taste our food. Fancy restaurant energy was everywhere, and yet halfway through our meal we were exhausted. I guess energy wasted is more tiring than just plain old energy spent

Established last June, Olea resides in one of those faux-industrial Pearl District buildings, replete with warehouse-like dimensions and skylight framed in a blue-collar metal grid. '40s-looking vintage lampshades dangle from the ceiling while the sleek open kitchens have a distinctly modern look. A long ramp past dark wood paneling flashing back to the '70s. These disparate ambient elements don't clash as much as they bleed together into a murky pool of self-aware chic.

Thank you!

by pearlgirl
On Saturday, 200 volunteers from Old Town Chinatown and the Pearl scoured the streets of both neighborhoods in the mega-clean up event Polish the Pearl & Shine Up Old Town . I would like to extend a note of thanks to all of those neighbors who participated.

Special kudos and many thanks to the PTP/SUOT committee members that spent weeks giving the event their creative energy, time, ideas and planning skills. We are very lucky to have these folks in our neighborhoods: Scott Omlid (Bridgeport), Joan Pendergast (Irving Street Lofts), Jon & Jan DuClos (The Henry), Lynn Kirwan (The Gregory), Brian Berning (Umpqua Bank), Carol McCreary (Old Town Lofts), Nancy Schreiner (Bridgeport), Tom Carrollo (Beardsley Building, Old Town), Lisa Youngren (CMI-Community Management Inc), and Sheri Winkleman (Bridgeport).

I would also like to acknowledge our roster of fine sponsors:
