Thank You Portland Classical Chinese Garden

by nancy
chinese garden Many thanks the  Portland Classical Chinese Garden  and Education Director Joan Kvitka for a lovely winter tour of the Garden.  Joan has that unusual ability to connect with children of all ages, and help them identify what they see and sense. The group learned about patterns and symbolism, inspected pomegranates growing in the courtyard, and had the help of a few Mandarin speaking children to learn simple phrases. The winter garden is a special treat, and was appreciated by all.If you were unable to attend, or want to remind your child of the tour, you might like the the  Family Guide  that the garden offers on their website.   The Garden is also planning extensive  Chinese New Year festivities  starting January 26th. And we're excited to announce that Joan will make a guest appearance at  Isobel's Clubhouse  on January 16th and 28th to read Chinese stories to the children. I've had a preview of some of the stories she's chosen

Notes of Interest » Jan 1, 2009

by shooter
belted-kingfisher Welcome to 2009!  The New Year starts off with a breath of fresh air: no smoking in all workplaces —including bars!  We also have some good news about a local restaurant , and Brian Libby at Portland Architecture offers a look back at the year in Portland architecture.  Lastly, if you're looking for something relaxing to do: Portland Parks provides a list of parks to do some bird watching.  So, find some time—between the rain and snow—go for a walk and try to spot a belted kingfisher or hooded merganser .  (photo: Pete Baer )

City of Portland employees exhibit generous spirit this holiday season

by jenniferd
2008 Toy Drive Dump Truck Commissioner Randy Leonard challenged two of the bureaus he oversees to do something different this holiday season. He didn't challenge them to boost morale or work harder during these stressful economic times. Leonard challenged the Portland Water Bureau and the city's Bureau of Development Services to a friendly holiday competition; a competition to fill barrels for the needy. The Water Bureau allied with Portland Fire and Rescue's Toy N Joy Makers program to fill toy barrels. The Bureau of Development Services picked Sunshine Barrels, a food donation program headed up by the Portland Police Bureau. The competition began on December 3 and ended this afternoon. The prize? Not much, really - a hearty congratulation from the Commissioner and bragging rights, of course. Fancy prize or not, however, city employees embraced this competition with a stunning amount of voracity and enthusiasm, especially given the rough state of the economy. The Water Bureau sent 53 barrels off with firef

2nd Annual Family Conversations - Online Survey

by nancy
The 2nd Annual Family Conversations for families in central Portland generated an impressive array of ideas for how to help families thrive in central Portland. They were attended by parents and grandparents and neighbors, and the diversity of opinion and ideas and life experience was energizing.  Although we visited and connected and had pleasant conversations, these were working sessions. The groups:  1) identified issues and projects that we want to work on this year
2) identified volunteers willing to lead and/or work on these issues and projects The identified priorities so far are: Community Center in the River District (advocating for the creation of) Community Giving and Involvement (engaging children and families in) Intergenerational Relationships (developing and strengthening) Nature and Wilderness (improving children's access to) Park Stewardship (engaging children and families in) Pre-school / Early Childhood Education in the River District (advoc

November Fun with Isobel’s Clubhouse

by nancy
Many thanks to all our talented and generous  neighborhood volunteers  who have organized so many fun events for central Portland families in November. Our children have already had great interactions with arts and music.  The Museum of Contemporary Craft  Family Tour led by  Sassafras Art Tours  was a huge success. Families experienced the Manufractured exhibit in a whole new way, and had a lot of fun learning. And 23 elementary-school-aged performers from  My Smilin Violin  wowed a First Thursday audience last night with Suzuki compositions and ear-to-ear smiles. There must be a baking theme in the air… Tonight a  parent is teaching kids how to make koulourakia , a traditional Greek cookie.  Nuvrei  will teach families how to make traditional marzipan confections on November 18 th , and  Cupcake Jones will  teach kids how to frost and decorate cupcakes  on November 19 th .

2nd Annual Family Conversations

by nancy
2863753802_6eeb07b46b Please join Central Portland Families for our second annual Family Conversations. We believe that families are good for central Portland, and that central Portland is good for families. Come help us make it even better. Thursday, November 13th from 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM Monday, November 17th from 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM Bring your important issues, your ideas for the future of central Portland, and your enthusiasm for helping families from all walks of live thrive in central Portland. We'll serve refreshments, engage in conversations, enjoy our neighbors and talk about ways that we can work together. Lately we've been feeling reflective. Perhaps it's the seasons changing. Or the nearness to Thanksgiving... we have a lot to be thankful for. It could also be that Central Portland Families' one-year anniversary is fast approaching. Hard to believe that we came together for the first time in November 2007 with a couple Family Conversations, attended by thirteen families. Those grandpare

Yard Sign 101

by pearlgirl
yard-signs Have you ever wondered how to get one of the yard signs that asks for motor vehicles to slow down for kids, pedestrians, or bikes? After a little digging, the Stephens Street Neighborhood Watch Group was able to find the answer to this question. Thanks to Steve Huckins and the entire Stephens Street crew for sharing this information with all of us. Together, we can do more—better! Yard Sign Lender Program The City of Portland Office of Transportation has yard signs available for residents to "borrow" for as long of a period of time as they are interested. Each sign features a black steel "A" frame along with a 18"h x 24"w PVC sign. The signs, attached by independent clips, hang freely from the steel "A" frame and move in the breeze. The Office of Transportation yard signs are portable and suitable for quick and easy display by residents in their yards. Signs should be brought indoors each evening, if possible, to minimize vandal

Grant from Kaiser Permanente Community Fund Puts Local Food on the Menu in Portland Public School and Gervais School Districts

by pearlgirl
zoe2 The first school assembly of the new academic year will take place today at 10 a.m., at Atkinson Elementary in South East Portland, where school food and education leaders will gather alongside farmers, food producers, grocery retailers and government officials to cheer a grant from the Kaiser Permanente Community Fund at the Northwest Health Foundation that will subsidize approximately 2,640,000 meals with the funds needed to serve more Oregon grown and processed foods in Portland Public Schools and Gervais School Districts. The grant, secured by Ecotrust’s Food and Farms program , will bolster existing efforts to bring more regionally produced food into two distinct school districts in the immediate school year, and kick-off a six-month study to measure the impact of nourishing the minds and bodies of young school children with fresh seasonal produce and locally processed foods, while directing dollars spent to feed Oregon students back into the local economy.  A
