Notes of Interest » December 2

by shooter
downtown-bridges Today's links have a definite bridge theme with stories about the Burnside Bridge Head project, the Sellwood Bridge replacement, and a pedestrian bridge in South Portland. We are a city of bridges. The Oregonian talks about the proposed "Made in Oregon" sign change, and Portland Art gives its picks for First Thursday. Last, there's a story about plans to improve the North Macadam area.

Portland Art Museum Shows Integrity

by TeachStreet
TS_Tree Portlanders should be proud to know that the Portland Art Museum has demonstrated its high level of integrity and transparency in regard to the art pieces that it acquires. In September the museum acquired a sculpture of Ganesha Stele that had little historical art record to track its origins with. It is not the kind of art piece you can design after taking a class or two in sculpting, so the museum is not worried about an impostor taking claim. The museum director, Brian Ferriso, said "this is all about transparency". Brian Ferriso is a member of the Association of Art Museum Directors ("AAMD") that was developed as an oversight committee for controversial matters just like these.

The purpose of the AAMD, as stated on their website, is to support its members in increasing the contribution of art museums to society.

Fontanelle Gallery Opens in Old Town Chinatown

by the nice brian
fontanelle-Daniel Fontanelle Gallery has opened at 205 SW Pine. Be sure to visit their website , check out the current and upcoming shows and add them to your list of places to visit.   Current Exhibit   Daniel Long I Heard It Through the Grapevine October 1–November 1, 2008
Fontanelle Gallery is pleased to present Daniel Long's first solo exhibition in Portland, OR, I Heard It Through The Grapevine.
This show consists of drawings and mixed media collages. I Heard It Through The Grapevine is a response to everyday thoughts and encounters. Daniel works quickly, making simple drawings of people and animals that are then deconstructed and collaged in a chance, stream of consciousness process, mixing new and old images. Daniel uses these colorful cutouts upon a paper stage to theatrically recreate the ongoing dialogue in his mind. Viewers need not know exactly what these montages reference, but are invited to superimpose their own experiences and narratives onto

TBA Round Up Round Up

by shooter
tba-day-1 Most publications have their TBA picks, highlights, or complete guides.  There's lots of good info out there, so I thought I'd round up all the TBA round ups I could find. Now, you can make an informed decision about what you want to see!

The Portland Mercury's Destination Fun is a list of highlights for the next few days, and their amazingly thorough guide to the entire festival is one of the best resources out there.

The Portland Tribune talks about Mike Daisey and Kenny Mellman and Bridget Everett .

The Oregonian mentions Antony and the Johnsons (we are going to that tonight and are VERY excited about it) and Neal Medlyn (who is hysterical).  Here's a link to our previous post about Neil along with a link to a video.  Brian Libby talks about visual artists at TBA.

Willamette Week's T.B.Ah-ha! is their highlight list, including that important list of FREE events.

Ultra talks about Sojour

p:ear's New Home Opens Sept 2nd

by shooter
pear-hq We've mentioned p:ear in the past—it's such a great organization! Very soon, they'll open their new location in Old Town Chinatown.

Today's story in the Daily Journal of Commerce highlights all of the firms who contributed services to make the new location possible. It's really inspirational to see the community support behind this very worthy non-profit. p:ear will open its new location on Sept 2nd. They're hosting a fundraise/re-opening party on Sept 3, 6-9PM.

Give p:ear a warm welcome!

Artists: Are You Ready For Representation?

by art2hart
DSCN1438 When artists find out that I am a curator and a visual artist agent, they want me to represent them. An agent is the mouthpiece and marketing tool for a visual artist, who normally spends time making art, not trying to sell it. In fact, trying to sell, or market, is one of the most difficult aspects of the visual arts business. Most visual artists are shy, and just want to do their craft. Going out and finding venues and buyers is time consuming for them and takes them way, way, out of their personal comfort zone. This is where I come in. I find places for artists to show their work. I negotiate with the venue management on the conditions of the show, and make sure the artist is fairly represented. I also design postcards and send out notices of the events. Unfortunately, I can't work with all artists, because they are not ready for me. There are some key factors I look for when I choose to work with an artist. In addition to the quality of their work (a personal esthetic on my pa

Portland In the National News... Again!

by stockboy
portland-topper USA Today reported that Portland was founded in the mid-19th century as a shipping and logging center (which prompted one of its first nicknames, Stumptown), and has been a poster child for progressive urban planning for decades. Check out the newspaper article online at USA Today .

Summer Arts on Main Street

by nancy
Free arts activities for kids in the center of downtown? Sign us up. How about a weekly family field trip, meeting at Isobel's Clubhouse and going together? Even better. See you at 11:00 on Wednesday! The  Oregonian  blurb says that families can enjoy arts, crafts, live music, food and free hands-on activities including paper crafts, hand puppets and the ubiquitous face painting. Main street is blocked off between Broadway and the Park Blocks... sounds like that nice festival street in front of the  Portland Center for the Performing Arts , which is the sponsor of the event.  Being mistress of the obvious, this events takes place right next door to the Wednesday  Portland Farmers Market , so it's also a chance to picnic in the park, with your packed lunch augmented by some fresh, seasonal, Oregon fruit and berries. Northwest Professional Dance Project  will present a special free performance for the launch of Summer Arts on Main. Their
