Portland Makes NYT List of 31 Summer Stops

by pearlgirl
The New York Times has named 31 interesting places to visit this summer. Portland made the list as a foodie haven: "As far as foodie havens go, Portland has been better known for its vegan cafes and eco-hippie cooperatives than for restaurants with gastronomic ambitions. But an emerging locavore movement has changed that. Drawn by the city’s low rents and artsy vibe, young chefs are breaking the culinary mold and tapping into the Northwestern bounty of local fisheries, small meat purveyors and artisanal farms. Sample the heat at places like Clyde Common (Southwest 10th and Stark; 503-228-3333; www.clydecommon.com ), which serves novel dishes like crispy pork belly with blood orange marmalade." NEW Edge in OLD Town

by souk
sign While the OTNCA develops an audio tour of Old Town Chinatown's history - to deliver via pedicabs starting in June - its future is being written. Where else can you sip ceremonial tea among peonies, obliterate your colleague's best score in Galaga, splash soy sauce on your shirt as your pork shumei drops in a balanced dimsum sauce, buy any kind of medium of art, volunteer for a good cause, top up your ginseng root, supplement your Japanese toy collection, and so much more? I love this neighborhood and am proud to be a stakeholder with so many others. I see us all here, quietly writing OTCT's history, one space at a time. I can't begin to do justice to all the pioneers of this neighborhood, so I won't try, but will start with a resounding THANK YOU! Thank you to all the trailblazing restaurants, bars, artists, progressive social service orgs and professional and retail businesses that color this historically unique neighborhood. To all those professionals who show up every day to

Le Coq closes base in Portland

by pearlgirl
From the Oregonian... The sun has set on the rooster in Portland.

Le Coq Sportif, the French sportswear brand featuring a crowing rooster in its logo, will close its Portland-based North American subsidiary effective immediately, a company official said.

The closure comes less than a year after Le Coq leased offices in Portland and three months after it relaunched its clothing and footwear lines to U.S. consumers. Le Coq, which employed seven in offices on Northwest First Avenue, becomes the third apparel brand this year to curtail operations or close shop in Portland. Adidas AG's North American unit, Adidas America Inc., announced layoffs in April, and sustainably branded apparel startup Nau Inc. shut down earlier this month, idling more than 60.

Tim McCool, chief executive of Le Coq Sportif North America, said Le Coq's closure "is a different story" from Nau's. Although spring sales in the U.S. were successful, executives in France want t

Club owner has eclectic list of faves

by pearlgirl
From the Oregonian...  In his life, Jamie Dunn has amassed a fair share of tchotchkes. While he refers to it as "hoarding," others describe this clever fellow as a savvy collector. Take, for instance, his Pez dispenser collection: When Dunn moved to Portland, he sold the tilting-head totems on eBay to use as a down payment for a house, which he then parlayed to finance his fashionably hip, upscale Gilt Club restaurant and bar. Pretty sweet.

This Old Town club has the feel of a vintage Vegas show lounge: tuxedos, jeans, eye candy in all shapes and sizes. It's a place where fast friends/good pals meet, greet and eat. A place that speaks of its owner's eclectic lifestyle.

Dunn moved to Portland eight years ago because, he says, "I got tired of getting on a plane in Chicago to come out here and do the things I like to do."

Sure, the snowboarding and mountain biking are great, but as the veteran restaurateur's list of personal favo

Return to sender: Elvis is back

by pearlgirl
church of elvis From the Oregonian... Elvis has re-entered the building -- or at least the building's elevator shaft.

After an absence of seven Blue Christmases, Portland's erstwhile international icon, the 24 Hour Church of Elvis, is coming back.

By mid-May, worshippers should be able to don their blue suede shoes and rock over to 408 N.W. Couch St., where a storefront window will house the "church," the world's cheapest psychic and the world's first 24-hour coin-operated art gallery. "I'll have a microphone and talk to people," says Stephanie Pierce, a Portland artist who founded the church nearly 20 years ago after two girls suggested it in a fan letter.

When Pierce rented her first storefront window, she crammed it with oddments: the Miracle of the Spinning Elvises, prize dispensers, tiny TV screens and Commodore 64 computers that spoke to visitors who fed quarters into coin slots.

She conducted weddings and inspired an annual Elvi
