Three Monkeys -- Expanded and Even Cooler

by northwest nola
IMG_6842 I went by one of my favorite stores today -- Northwest Portland's Three Monkeys. Recently, they expanded their store, combining what was once Three Monkeys (vintage housewares) and Three More Monkeys (clothes) into one giant Three Monkeys store. And I know I'm partial because I already loved this store to begin with, but I love it even more in its newly expanded space. The new space is larger, warm, welcoming and calls to your inner shopper. Maybe it's because there are all sorts of bright and shiny objects to choose from; maybe it's because I like that vintage-y style of decor, but something about the new store is worth at least a look -- especially as the holiday season comes rushing upon us. As far as fashion goes, they just got in a giant selection of holiday dresses, so if you're in the market for one, take a gander at their selection. Since I am a "touch" shopper (I like to touch appealing fabrics and such) I was in a little paradise of sorts trying to find a dress f

Essential Ingredients of Great Neighborhood Breakfast Spots

by pearlgirl
brunch-and-breakfast-tips-7 Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, especially when it's shared with good friends at a favorite local breakfast spot. But, breakfast can easily become the most frustrating meal of the day if you pick the wrong restaurant. We all know this place: the notoriously long wait and poor service makes otherwise stellar food regrettable. I used to be convinced that a long wait and poor service were hallmarks of a great neighborhood breakfast spot—they're so busy, it must be worth it! Not so much anymore. Over time, I've learned to separate the, um, buckwheat from the chaff. In addition to consistently delicious food and coffee, I've learned that truly great neighborhood breakfast joints share some other key ingredients: they serve breakfast every day, have a diverse mix of patrons, are reasonably priced, and, above all, they have an efficient process.  Breakfast Served Daily Good food is not an accident. Great breakfast restaurants serve it every day, not ju

Pixie Project Worth a Visit

by northwest nola
NN-Newman I admit that I am a total sucker for animals. Let's just put it this way, my husband and I live in less than 500 square feet and we now have two cats and a dog. We can't help it, we love them all, and being forced to leave a pet store, shelter, etc. without a new pet is very much like torture! But then again, i don't want to become the "Crazy Cat Lady," either! Up until yesterday, Hubby and I only had two pets -- our cats Lucas and Timber. That all changed last evening when we went to my new favorite animal rescue site, The Pixie Project , to pick up our newest furry friend, Newman the Dog. We discovered Newman last weekend at one of the Pixie Project's satellite locations, Dog Star , a doggy daycare in the Pearl. Dog Star is kind enough to house shelter pets for The Pixie Project and often has as many as 6 dogs and cats on site, just because they love animals. Knowing that Dog Star houses shelter animals, we have periodically popped in over the past couple months to se

Looking for a New Best Friend? Check Out Oregon Dog Rescue!

by pearlgirl

Meet Latka My name is Latka and I'm a male German Shepherd. The shelter picked me up because I was a stray. I can be aloof with strangers at first but once I know you I am the best companion in the world! I weigh 72 lbs and I'm approx. 2 1⁄2 years old. No cats please. My adoption fee is $150. We will be at a special event Saturday, August 9th, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Tualatin Crawfish festival located at Tualatin Community Park near the intersection of Boones Ferry Rd. and Tualatin Rd. Visit Oregon Dog Rescue for more information on Latka.   Cats Aren't the Only Ones with Nine Lives There's another side of the animal adoption process that most of us never see—rescue and rehabilitation. Thanks to organizations such as Oregon Dog Rescue, we see the end result: a healthy dog in need of a good home. We don't see the lives these dogs led prior to their rescue. Some come from puppy mills, others are strays, and many others are from owners w

HeartBreak—Great Pups for Adoption

by pdxdog
JohnJohnAmericanEskimo We are so lucky to be in such a wonderful dog loving community. pdxdog.com is only one site where you can find some of the hundreds of dogs up for adoption—placed on our site by the many rescue and adoption groups in our area. Too many of the stories will break your heart and the dogs are so sweet. They just want a good home and love, just like all of us. We know that there are a lot of animals that need good homes, maybe yours is one of them. Everytime I read one of these "bad" care stories, I get so angry and disgusted at these very thoughtless and stupid people. It's simple, just don't have a dog, if you don't want to take care of one! If you are looking for a pup, check pdxdog.com and the many selfless and fantastic groups that help them out. In the future, we will list some of them for you to check out. Maybe you can comment by listing someone you know that rescues and adopts dogs... We can be the best adoption and rescue city!!! Thanks Portland!
