15 Mashup Tools for Your Local Neighborhood

by dariusmonsef
Want a donut? Want to know if you'll need an umbrella today? Trying to avoid traffic? Want to know if it's safe for your kids to play in the front yard? We'll look a dozen-ish mashups that provide useful, helpful, interesting and fun information about the local area that you you live in. For those asking what a mashup is? The web 2.0 world spawned thousands of social networks and user contributed content sites... The same world has connected even more sites and people with the ability for developers to take the APIs from a couple different sites and mash them together to create new and interesting ways to share information and data.   WalkScore | Find What's In a Walkable Distance

Announcing Indoor Active Play

by nancy
cami curtis studio Families that live, work, learn and play in central Portland can enjoy three additional options for indoor active play this fall and winter. We have three generous donors to thank for making this happen;  Cami Curtis Performing Art Center ,  Perfectly Pearl Modern Bridal Event , and  Zimmerman Community Center . These community based businesses all understand that families need a safe, warm, dry place to play when the weather's bad. Cami Curtis Performing Art Center is donating the use of one of their dance studios. They also offer many great classes for kids, taught by talented teachers in this beautiful space. For pictures and more info, please visit  www.camicurtis.com Perfectly Pearl Modern Bridal Event raised funds in Spring 2008 to purchase Indoor Active Play. There are still funds left from this donation, and they're again being used to purchase time at Pearl Court Activity Center. Zimmerman Community Center is purchasing time at Pearl Court Activity Ce

Fire Safety for Families

by nancy
IMG_0746 Thanks so much to  Fire Station 3  for hosting neighborhood families yesterday. The Fire Fighters, especially Fire Fighter Jason, did a great job of engaging the children, meeting them at their level, and mixing up fun with safety education. Given the large group – 17 kids with mothers and a few fathers - were all impressed with how much we learned. We even came away with specific ideas for how to make our building communities safer. Here are some  photos of the gathering .  One of the first things the kids learned was that if they hear a smoke detector alarm they should Get Out, Stay Out and Go To Your Meeting Place. Meeting place? None of us had meeting places. But most of us had chosen one by the time the tour was over. And a few buildings had even talked about a ‘Family Meeting Place’ where all the families would go if we had to evacuate our buildings. Kids also practiced dialing 911 (and memorizing the number

A Call to all Hot Stone Virgins!

by northwest nola
hot-stone-massage I am a massage slut. I can't help it, I just love the human touch. And I especially love the human touch when it is rubbing my aches and pains away. So, when the option of a hot stone massage was proposed to me, I wasn't sure what to think—what is this hot stone massage that they speak of? Will it be as good as the real deal? Turns out, hot stone massage is pretty much... well, awesome. The idea is that the hot stones, placed on specific parts of your body, prep your muscles for the rest of the massage—the heat from the stones penetrates down to your muscles and loosens them up so they are in prime condition for massage, and in theory, the massage will be more effective. And more heavenly. They even put them between your toes, which is oddly relaxing. I also found that the hot stone was the ultimate compliance with gravity. While the stones weren't heavy, they did create pressure on my body and by the time they were removed, several minutes later, I felt almost at one wi

Health Matters » Shiatsu for Health Maintenance

by pearlgirl
IMG_1270 Shiatsu for Health Maintenance © Bart Walton, M.Ac., L.Ac. Traditional Japanese Healing Arts   Shiatsu is the Japanese healing art of rhythmic finger pressure applied to specific points on the body. Many people in this country associate shiatsu with massage. But actually, shiatsu is a complete system of medicine, which includes examination, diagnosis and treatment, according to the same ancient principles used in acupuncture. Shiatsu (which literally means, "finger pressure") evolved in Japan through the natural association of traditional massage with acupuncture, which was introduced to Japan around 1000 A.D. Research in Japan has shown that shiatsu improves the function of the muscles, nerves, blood vessels, lymph nodes, endocrine glands and internal organs. In addition, shiatsu assists the body in eliminating metabolic waste and chemical residues, which build up as a result of stress and fatigue. In our fast paced society, chronic over stimulation o

Big Strides at Legacy

by pearlgirl
walking-0608-050 by Minot Cleveland, MD  Hippocrates said, "Walking is man's best friend." If the ancient Greek physician were alive today, I'm sure he would amend his aphorism to include women. Not to mention, older adults, slender and overweight people and those with or without medical problems. Our modern medical science confirms what the ancient Greeks proclaimed: regular physical activity is essential for a healthy body, mind and spirit. Walking is medicine that works! It's easy, fun, and one of the best ways to reap the enormous benefits of regular physical activity. Walking can reduce risk of obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, osteoporosis and heart disease. Heart disease and stroke are the #1 and #3 killers of American men and women. Getting active even helps many quit smoking. Walking can also help your mind and spirit. It reduces stress, increases a sense of well-being, has a positive impact on depression and anxiety, heightens creativity an

NW Neighbors Sweat Out Pool Closure

by nancy
Many thanks Tanya for pointing out this article in the Portland Tribune . We've been wondering why the pool is closed, what with swimming lesson season going strong. Here's the article: Some Northwest Portland residents are steamed that the only public swimming pool in their part of town has been closed for seven months — included during the recent heat waves, when temperatures topped 90 degrees. The pool in the basement of the MLC School is owned by Portland Public Schools and operated by Portland Parks & Recreation. It has been shut since late last year because of leaks and that will cost an estimated half-million dollars to repair, including upgrading the pool’s plumbing and drainage systems. “This is not a priority for us at this time,” said school district spokesman Matt Shelby. “Our priority classroom instruction.” The parks bureau has no plans to immediately repair the pool, either. But neighborhood resident Katherine Dunn

Kidical Mass - Second Ride

by nancy
Kidical Mass July Last night was the second Kidical Mass ride in Portland. Decorated bikes, a primer on rules of the road, and lots of kids excited to ride safely in the street. KPTV was there, and here's a link to a video and article on their website. This was my son's first time riding his own bike on the road while I biked next to him. I couldn't have asked for a safer way for him to get some time on the road. The ride leaders are excellent, the group stays together, and all the parents and kids are watching out for each other. This is a fabulous way to role model good riding skills, and have kids and adults learning together. Kidical Mass is now a regular event, taking place on the third Friday of every month. Hope to see you on August 15th. If you'd like to get updates from the ride organizer, Angela, you can email her at angela@bta4bikes.org and ask to be added to her distribution list.

HeartBreak—Great Pups for Adoption

by pdxdog
JohnJohnAmericanEskimo We are so lucky to be in such a wonderful dog loving community. pdxdog.com is only one site where you can find some of the hundreds of dogs up for adoption—placed on our site by the many rescue and adoption groups in our area. Too many of the stories will break your heart and the dogs are so sweet. They just want a good home and love, just like all of us. We know that there are a lot of animals that need good homes, maybe yours is one of them. Everytime I read one of these "bad" care stories, I get so angry and disgusted at these very thoughtless and stupid people. It's simple, just don't have a dog, if you don't want to take care of one! If you are looking for a pup, check pdxdog.com and the many selfless and fantastic groups that help them out. In the future, we will list some of them for you to check out. Maybe you can comment by listing someone you know that rescues and adopts dogs... We can be the best adoption and rescue city!!! Thanks Portland!
