New Boutique, Amai Unmei, A Must Visit
by northwest nola
A friend of mine recently opened up a great boutique on NW 23rd, Amai Unmei . I know I'm partial, but what a cool store! When I found out she was opening up shop right down the street from me, I was excited. But when I walked in to her brand spanking new lair o'fashion, I was even more excited, as I totally got it. This lady is in the fashion business for a reason; because she gets fashion. Not only do the the fashions rock, but the store itself is gorgeous. It is clean and bright. You feel like you can get your shopping done while you're there. I also think it's neat that Allison, the owner/designer, spends a fair amount of time manning the mothership. How cool to walk into a store and actually speak with the designer who made the dress you're about to buy. I spent a good twenty minutes salivating over the rich silky dresses and trendy winter coats, while silently deciding what I'm not going to buy at other stores this month in order to buy one of Allison's dresses. Full disclosu

Wax On. Wax Off. (Hair gone)
by northwest nola
Full disclosure: I am hairy. Like, Chewbacca hairy. Okay. That's an exaggeration, but you get the idea. Everywhere that a lady is not supposed to grow hair, I grow it. Since the seventh grade, i have been bleaching, plucking, tweezing, pulling and waxing pretty much any part of my body that I could reach. Naturally, panic set in when I moved to Portland three years ago and left my beloved and trusted waxer back in the midwest. Who would I be able to trust not to make my pores bleed? Who would make my upper lip turn the least red after viciously pulling off the hot wax that I had become so accustomed to smelling? Who? I tried a few different people out and I had some decent waxes, but it wasn't until karma came my way last spring that I found the Queen of All Waxers -- Ginny Toussaint, at Blooming Moon Spa . Ginny full-on admits that she obsesses over hair removal, carefully examining each and every follicle to make sure each and every hair is gone... and gone for good. Well,

Shop Talk – The Paper Station
by alex
I'm not a big fan of air travel (too many people in too small a space with too many bumps and mechanical noises!) but I am a big fan of the Portland airport. It's a nice, manageable size, clean and organized, and best of all, they have some great shops where you can easily kill some time if you're early for a flight or waiting for a loved one to arrive.I especially love The Paper Station – as the name implies they have a great selection of greeting cards and other paper products (I found the cutest graduation card there not too long ago). Portland-based Nau apparel back in business
by shooter
This is an interesting story. Horny Toad, which has its sole store in the Pearl, bought Nau, based in NWDA, and is going to operate Nau as a separate subsidiary. Nau was highly praised for its sustainable business practices, eco-friendly fabrics, and philanthropy - 5 percent of profits went to charity. Tight financial and retail markets, and an overly ambitious growth plan killed it.
It's good to see the brand and products won't disappear, and it will have a chance to grow at a more reasonable pace.
Read the story at The Oregonian , KGW , Portland Business Journal , The Portland Mercury , and Ultra .

End of An Era for Seaplane
by shooter
From Ultra : It’s official. The ink is dry on an agreement for Kate Towers and Holly Stalder to sell Seaplane after 8 years as The Boutique at ground zero of Portland’s independent fashion community. Pioneers in what is now a more evolved boutique scene, Towers and Stalder built the link between local designers and local consumers (which has paid major dividends for designers and the local economy), generously promoting the work of designers too numerous to name both in store and with fashion shows and events. When Towers and Stalder opened Seaplane on SE Belmont in what had been a vintage store (and their employer), there was no shop in Portland carrying a variety of local designers with a modern aesthetic. They began selling modified vintage, added a few designers (Susan Stars was first!), sold accessories, paper goods, and even local music, and grew from there. They’ve carried upwards of 80 designers at a time, most local, a few from up and down the

Amai Unmei will open boutique off 23rd Ave
by pearlgirl
According to Marjorie Skinner at the Portland Mercury, Amai Unmei (pronounced ah-mah’-ee oon’-may) will open a boutique at 2275 NW Johnson. If you're unfamiliar with Amai Unmei , here's a little info from Ultra PDX: amai unmei is Portland-based designer Allison Covington’s line of classic, clean-line evening dresses and coats in rich silks: chiffon, charmeuse, brocade. In launching amai unmei last year, Covington was inspired by the Japanese high art of tsutsumi, or wrapping. What results are not von Furstenberg wrap dresses, but looks that definitely reference the notion of wrapping the body as one would a gift. amai unmei is available in Portland at boutiques including Mimi & Lena (1948 NE Broadway), Artemisia (300 SW Stark), and Ella’s Boutique (2529 NE Alberta). To view the current collections, visit the Amai Unmei website.
