Portland Water Bureau Turns Off Groundwater Supply

The Portland Water Bureau turned off its groundwater supply system this morning. The system has supplied Water Bureau customers with drinking water since high levels of turbidity forced the bureau to turn off its primary Bull Run water supply last week. "This was an unusual run of groundwater." said Water Bureau Administrator David Shaff. "When intense rain in the Bull Run causes excessive turbidity, that rain is generally followed by more rain which flushes the turbidity out. In this case, there was no more rain, so the levels of turbidity in the watershed remained above acceptable serving levels. Flushing has taken a bit longer than normal." While both of the bureau's water sources, the Bull Run watershed and the Columbia South Shore Well Field (CSSWF) meet and exceed all federal drinking water standards, the bureau relies primarily on the Bull Run source to provider customers with drinking water. Historic Preservation Needs Assessment Questionnaire

Lost any good buildings in your neighborhood lately? If you're interested in or concerned about historic preservation, the Bosco-Milligan Foundation wants to hear from you. Take their historic preservation needs assessment questionnaire and tell them what you think about historic preservation in your neighborhood. The information will be used to develop future preservation programs, technical assistance and training at the Architectural Heritage Center (AHC). Completed questionnaires are due by Friday, November 28. Please mail your completed forms to Val Ballestrem or drop them at AHC . The daily news is pretty bleak these days, but yesterday we found four Portland-related articles that gave our spirits a lift: There are two new restaurants—one in Sellwood-Moreland and the other in NW District —whose value-priced menus are getting good reviews. Beaumont Middle School offers a unique mentorship program that pairs community members with struggling students—with fantastic results! The "crown jewel" of the Portland skateboard park system is planned for Old Town Chinatown. Yesterday, the City issued a request for proposal for a skateboard park builder and designer. The Community Cycling Center is launching a new project in 2009 to reach underserved communities in North and Northeast Portland. Hermitage is a Home

I dropped into Hermitage this week and had my usual head spinning desire for everything in the shop. Jennifer June is the talented proprietress of Hermitage, with an exquisite eye for the stupendously cool and unique. One of the things Jennifer does best is bring work from independent artists living outside of Portland into Portland. I like that when I go to her shop, I can say, who is this by? Instead of ... oh I love this, it is by so and so, right? While Hermitage is the home to many lovely home accessories, the main focus here is on wallpaper. Jennifer retails some of the most unique and special wallpaper designers I have come across. Much is handmade, screen printed, block printed or hand painted. A perusal of her books made me consider wallpapering my whole house. But I have refrained. For now. If this sounds too good to be true, it is. Tutors, Mentors Needed

The Youth Employment Institute is a nonprofit organization in Northeast Portland that provides education, employment and personal development programs for youth. One of our main services is our GED Preparation program which focuses on GED attainment in an alternative school setting. We also provide specialized services for young parents, which include case management services, parenting education and an onsite child care center. Additionally, we offer paid and unpaid work experiences, job readiness training and gang prevention services to the youth in our programs. There are a number of ways community members can get involved in our programs: Academic tutors work with the youth in our GED program. Tutors come in once or twice a week during the school day to tutor youth one-on-one in either writing or math. Mentors work with youth in our young parents program. 2008 Spirit of Portland Award winners announced

A group of 21 Portland individuals/organizations who have helped make our city shine have been named recipients of the Spirit of Portland Awards this year. In addition, nine others were chosen by Mayor Tom Potter to win the Mayor's Awards. All 30 winners will be recognized during an award ceremony Dec.11 at City Hall.
