Shop Talk – The Paper Station

by alex
PaperStation 1 I'm not a big fan of air travel (too many people in too small a space with too many bumps and mechanical noises!) but I am a big fan of the Portland airport. It's a nice, manageable size, clean and organized, and best of all, they have some great shops where you can easily kill some time if you're early for a flight or waiting for a loved one to arrive.

I especially love The Paper Station – as the name implies they have a great selection of greeting cards and other paper products (I found the cutest graduation card there not too long ago). Read more »

by pearlgirl
121744467729875200 Have you been to Bar Mingo? It's the casual bar that adjoins Cafe Mingo —that scrumptious place at 807 NW 21st. If you're in the mood for great food with a short wait, this place could fit the bill. Read the review at the Portland Tribune.

New plan to help Portland Office of Transportation

by shooter
Sam Adams may have shelved the idea of Safe, Sound and Green Streets, but at least he's recommending a way to deal with the Transportation Office budget shortfall.  His idea is to dedicate the $4 million a year in unanticipated Utility License Fee revenue increase to the Portland Office of Transportation.  While it will not address the backlog of basic service maintenance that is needed, it will prevent the Transportation Office from further cutting services.

Are You a Community Ambassador?

by pearlgirl
megaphone This weekend, I got a really sweet email from a neighbor in Kenton: she was concerned that we missed some really great events in her neighborhood! In a word: yes, we missed posting them—but not intentionally! (They're posted now, check 'em out here ) Portland has a very active neighborhood system and our goal is to offer news, events and commentary for all 95 Portland neighborhoods. If you are a community ambassador—someone who's in the know about your neighborhood—we'd love to have you represent your 'hood here on Neighborhood Notes and keep everyone informed on what life in your neighborhood is all about. If you're interested in being a community ambassador, send an email to talk@neighborhoodnotes.com and indicate your interest. If you'd prefer to keep a lower profile and just send tips, that's okay too! Send info to talk@neighborhoodnotes.com Thanks to everyone for all of the emails, comments and suggestions!!! We're implementing neighborhood photo galleries

Steel Bridge work to disrupt MAX trains

by shooter
This promises to be fun for commuters. At least the disruptions are for a relatively short term and the work that's being done will create a better system. Read the Portland Tribune's story .

Kids Marching Band - first practice was great!

by nancy
IMG_0124 Here's part of a post from I Love Portland . She's writing about the first practice of the Kids Marching Band. We were there, and it was a LOT of fun. I Love Portland says: "The Kids Marching Band had it’s first practice and it was a hit! We all introduced ourselves, talked about our instruments and costumes and practiced the marching song. Then Jake and Leeland, with their rhythm sticks and recorder, led us to Jamison Square where we showed off all of our fun to the other kids! It was great and we can’t wait to do it again! The innocent onlookers laughed and clapped." The photos really round out the story. You can see them here , at our flickr page.

Portland School Board takes steps to finance facilities and IT upgrades

by pearlgirl
apple-full  The volunteer Portland School Board approved a resolution Monday that enables Portland Public Schools to move forward with the repair of its aging and deteriorating facilities and the needed upgrade of computers and software. The board authorized the district to reimburse up to $50 million in costs it might incur between now and the completion of subsequent debt financing. The board has voiced its intent to seek a capital bond to fund needed repairs, renovation or rebuilding of Portland Public Schools' 90-plus schools and other facilities, and better support the educational and technological needs of students. Portland Public School buildings are 67 years old, on average. Nationally, school buildings are an average age of 45 years old. Director David Wynde, the board's point person on the facilities work, said: "This decision gives us the ability to start tackling some of the needed improvements now. It will save money by allowing us to recover funds we may need to use i

Big Strides at Legacy

by pearlgirl
walking-0608-050 by Minot Cleveland, MD  Hippocrates said, "Walking is man's best friend." If the ancient Greek physician were alive today, I'm sure he would amend his aphorism to include women. Not to mention, older adults, slender and overweight people and those with or without medical problems. Our modern medical science confirms what the ancient Greeks proclaimed: regular physical activity is essential for a healthy body, mind and spirit. Walking is medicine that works! It's easy, fun, and one of the best ways to reap the enormous benefits of regular physical activity. Walking can reduce risk of obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, osteoporosis and heart disease. Heart disease and stroke are the #1 and #3 killers of American men and women. Getting active even helps many quit smoking. Walking can also help your mind and spirit. It reduces stress, increases a sense of well-being, has a positive impact on depression and anxiety, heightens creativity an
