The State of Oregon Pinot
by stockboy
In a recent Wall Street Journal article, Oregon wines, especially our Pinot Noir, were reviewed. "We are delighted to report that Oregon Pinot continues its upward trajectory. The difference in the wines over the years is remarkable. We found again and again in this tasting that the wines have developed a confidence and depth that beautifully complement their lovely fruit. The wines have not only a purity of fruit but a purity of vision that is very attractive. Like Burgundy itself, these are wines that speak softly to the more romantic parts of our being." The entire article can be read at Wall Street Journal .

The brand evolved from juniors into a more mature and contemporary market—and by mature, they mean girls in their mid-20's. City Council Votes in Favor of NW Parking Garage
by shooter
The City Council rejected the appeal by the NW District Association of Richard Singer's proposed parking garage at NW 23rd and NW Irving. The vote was 4 to 1, with Sam Adams voting to uphold the appeal. While not guaranteeing construction will occur, this does remove a barrier and opens the door for the garage to be built. I still don't understand why the fact that existing pay lots go under-used continues to be ignored, or how Singer proposes to change drivers' preference for free on street parking.
Any shopping district will draw traffic, but shoppers' preference for free on street parking contributes greatly to the traffic along NW 23rd. Until that is addressed existing pay parking lots will continue to be lightly used. Chez Joly—New to the Edge of the Pearl
by stockboy
By chance, we wandered into Chez Joly this morning for breakfast and discovered that we were their first customers! Newly open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Chez Joly, owned and operated by the Joly family, is a welcomed addition to the edge of the Pearl. It's located in the DeSoto Building at Broadway and Davis. Chez Joly, decorated in a comfortable French café style, is both elegant and comfortable. The menu is affordable and offers a wide variety of country French cuisine. Our breakfast was served with a smile, the staff was attentive, the coffee was robust and the bill was reasonable—so much so my companion decided to return for lunch with a friend to continue checking it out! [The report was that the place was bustling and lunch was a hit, too!] Chez Joly will be another great choice to consider and we look forward to returning. City Council to Consider NW 23rd Parking Garage - Again
by shooter
The City Council is set, yet again, to consider developer Richard Singer's parking garage proposal at Wednesday's City Council meeting. The proposed garage, located at NW 23rd Ave and NW Irving, was voted down two years ago by the City Council. Now, Singer is back to put a slightly modified proposal in front of a slightly different City Council—which just may vote in his favor.Today's Portland Tribune covers the latest chapter in this continuing saga. What the Tribune fails to mention is that the existing pay parking lots along NW 23rd are underutilized. In last month's NW Examiner , Allan Classen published a survey that clearly demonstrates the existing pay parking lots are an underutilized resource.
Patrons of the NW 23rd shopping district prefer to search for free on street parking rather than pay to park. Drivers can be seen circling blocks in search of parking, passing by the pay lots. Singer has yet to explain how he in

Central City Butt Brigade Committee
by pearlgirl
January 1, 2009 signifies a new era for Oregonians when the Smokefree Workplace Law bans smoking from any establishment that is not a designated smoke shop or cigar bar. In addition, smoking will be prohibited within 10 feet of doors or open windows. What does this mean for us? It means that you won't go home from a bar needing to take a shower and wash all your clothing. But it also means that there will be more cigarette butts than ever in the streets and on sidewalks. No smoking within 10 feet of the entrance removes the responsibility of cleanliness from the business owner and puts it in the hands of the smoker. Ten feet outside of a bar, especially in high-density neighborhoods like the inner city neighborhoods will often put you in front of another business or in the streets. When in the streets, many smokers will choose to stomp their butts instead of disposing of them properly. Cigarette butts are composed of a type of plastic that can persist in the environmen

23 Hoyt—A Restaurant with a "Food Flair"
by stockboy
Friendly, forthright and obviously talented Bruce Carey , the owner of 23 Hoyt and several other well known Portland restaurants, hosted a dinner introducing Chef Aaron Barnett and their fresh and "Portland" cutting edge cuisine. Our autumn dinner began with a sweet corn soup delicately flavored with cilantro, cumin and jalapeno with lime offering a slight snap to the smooth consistency of the soups body. Chef Aaron credits his mother for this creation. Being raised with this influence, it is no wonder that the next courses were equally spectacular. Our next course presented was a foie gras, a rich and flavorful pate served with a delicious accompanying citrus port sauce over poached prunes that were soft and succulent. Following the pate, a seared sea scallops was offered placed atop a cauliflower "risotto.' The cauliflower was chopped very fine and mixed with capers and sultanas, a white seedless grape of Middle Eastern origin, then sprinkled with a homemade chor
