Take the Streetcar Survey

by Trace
streetcar The Portland Office of Transportation (PDOT) is currently drafting a Streetcar System Plan, with the intent of creating a citywide network. The purpose of the Streetcar System Plan (SSP) District Working Group process that is currently underway is to engage the public in the beginning of a long-range planning effort that will identify future streetcar corridors with the highest potential in a long-term implementation strategy. Specifically, the goal of the NE District Working Group process is to identify where community support for potential streetcar corridors is located in NE Portland. Currently, volunteers like us are doing community outreach to gauge the level of support in Northeast Portland along various corridors such as Broadway/Weidler, MLK Blvd, Alberta St, and 82nd Ave. The city has stated that new streetcar corridors will be prioritized in areas where community support exists.

Presentation Leads Water Blogmistress to Strong Realization

by jenniferd
water-scarce I had a really neat experience yesterday. I was invited to the adidas campus, located in North Portland, to talk about the excellent quality of Portland's tap water . The folks over at adidas have organized a group of "sustainability ambassadors," who are working to improve "green" practices at their company, from head to toe. The idea is that the ambassadors meet periodically and not only decide on changes they would like to implement company-wide, but also to learn information to transmit to co-workers. I spent about 1/2 hour talking to this group of people about Portland's great tap water and worked on dispelling many of the myths and fears that people have about drinking from the tap . I was delighted that they not only listened incredibly intently to my presentation, but they also asked some great follow-up questions. I could tell that this group was really thinking about what I had told them. They even invited me back for their health fair in October. T

New NW Boutique is Absolutely Unique!

by northwest nola
41KNJ2ZY89L._SL500_AA280_ Today I visited what surely must be one of Portland's most unique spaces -- a new boutique art gallery tucked quietly into Northwest Portland. The Life Jacket Design Shop & Gallery, which opened about 6 weeks ago, is home to all things original: one-of-a-kind artwork, mixed media, accessories and home decor. Owner and resident Carol Christensen, a Seattle native who recently relocated to Portland after spending 18 years in New York, is both curator and artisan of this little museum. She will proudly guide you on a tour of her small space, telling you many of the stories that accompany her creative expressions. Carol named the gallery, Life Jacket, at least partially in reference to the fact that it's her new project aimed at taking her mind off of her son going away to college. In essence, it is her "lifejacket," though she is sure to note that she is not quite that desperate! A lifejacket, she thinks, tends to wrap itself around you and keep you above the "st

NW Irving Sewer Repair Update

by shooter
sewer repair The City's contractor has begun installing service laterals near NW 23rd and Irving. The crew will likely be at NW 23rd Avenue by the middle of next week, 9/3/08.   One week look ahead: • Installation of five more laterals before reaching NW 23rd Ave. • Installation of service laterals at NW 23rd on or around Wednesday September, 3rd. • Connection of laterals near NW 23rd will likely impact traffic. Flaggers will be onsite to assist with traffic flow. • The contractor will be removing some of the equipment that has been staged on Irving between NW 22nd and NW 23rd. This equipment is no longer needed and will make room to work on the laterals in that block. • Please observe the no parking signs on NW Irving to ensure that your vehicle does not obstruct the sewer work. We expect the crew to install an average of two or three laterals a day. During lateral construction, the crew will do their best to work on one side of the street to allow for lo

NW District's Groundhog Day

by shooter
groundhog day You knew this wasn't going away. The garage at NW 23rd and NW Irving is back in the news—again. On August 11th, the Historical Landmarks Commission approved a new design for Richard Singer's proposed parking garage at 2317 NW Irving. The vote was 3-2, so it was by no means unanimous. Commissioner Harris Matarazzo wasn't happy that the project included the demolition of a historic house, while Art DeMuro, commission chair, felt the garage design was appropriate, sensitive, and necessary. The neighborhood association doesn't like the location, because half of it is in a residential district—there's a nearby preschool, and the NW Irving/NW 23rd intersection is one of the busiest pedestrian crossings in the city. Singer's latest design has fewer parking spaces (87 instead of 103), pushes back the entrance/exit from the street, and includes a mechanical arm and warning sounds (living next door to that would be a joy). It's not like the neighborhood association hasn't

Portland A Community Leader

by stockboy
"L.A. could learn a thing or two from Portland... The city is a veritable transit utopia where light rail goes to the airport, parking restrictions increase public transit use and free streetcar service benefits downtown businesses. It also has a 20-year head start on planning. By Steve Hymon, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer August 18, 2008 I recently spent a long weekend in Portland, Ore. It was hard not to marvel at all the things that city does well on the transportation front. I began to wonder what elements could be applied here." To read the entire article check out the LA Times story.
