New plan to help Portland Office of Transportation

Sam Adams may have shelved the idea of Safe, Sound and Green Streets, but at least he's recommending a way to deal with the Transportation Office budget shortfall. His idea is to dedicate the $4 million a year in unanticipated Utility License Fee revenue increase to the Portland Office of Transportation. While it will not address the backlog of basic service maintenance that is needed, it will prevent the Transportation Office from further cutting services.

In a word: yes, we missed posting them—but not intentionally! NW Neighbors Sweat Out Pool Closure

Many thanks Tanya for pointing out this article in the Portland Tribune . We've been wondering why the pool is closed, what with swimming lesson season going strong. Here's the article: Some Northwest Portland residents are steamed that the only public swimming pool in their part of town has been closed for seven months — included during the recent heat waves, when temperatures topped 90 degrees. The pool in the basement of the MLC School is owned by Portland Public Schools and operated by Portland Parks & Recreation. It has been shut since late last year because of leaks and that will cost an estimated half-million dollars to repair, including upgrading the pool’s plumbing and drainage systems. “This is not a priority for us at this time,” said school district spokesman Matt Shelby. “Our priority classroom instruction.” The parks bureau has no plans to immediately repair the pool, either. Stumptown Challenge Winners

Portland's first urban adventure challenge— the Stumptown Challenge —took place on Saturday. Neighborhood Notes was one of the event sponsors and we hosted a drawing for four $50 gift cards to Kenny and Zuke's deli. The winners: 1. Eamon Driscoll 2. Michael Vitti 3. Tracy McFarlane 4. Portland Plan DRAFT Work Program Available

On June 8th the Planning Commission approved the Draft Preliminary Work Program for the Portland Plan. This document contains state-required Periodic Review tasks and reflects the community input received at the May and June meetings and at the public hearings held by the Planning Commission. Council will hold its first public hearing on the Draft Preliminary Work Program on Wednesday, August 6th. The meeting begins at 2 pm at City Hall, located at 1221 SW 4th Avenue. NW Portland Northwest District Paper Source is under construction in the former home of Urbino Manor , a gift and home decor store, will open in the former home of Child's Play at 907 NW 23rd. Relish closed its Pearl location and opened its new flagship store at 1715 NW Lovejoy. An Indian restaurant called Indish plans to open in the former home of Fascinations at 305 NW 21st. Kidical Mass - Second Ride

Last night was the second Kidical Mass ride in Portland. Decorated bikes, a primer on rules of the road, and lots of kids excited to ride safely in the street. KPTV was there, and here's a link to a video and article on their website. This was my son's first time riding his own bike on the road while I biked next to him. I couldn't have asked for a safer way for him to get some time on the road. The ride leaders are excellent, the group stays together, and all the parents and kids are watching out for each other. This is a fabulous way to role model good riding skills, and have kids and adults learning together. Kidical Mass is now a regular event, taking place on the third Friday of every month.
