Portland Water Bureau Turns Off Groundwater Supply

by jenniferd
7620209 The Portland Water Bureau turned off its groundwater supply system this morning. The system has supplied Water Bureau customers with drinking water since high levels of turbidity forced the bureau to turn off its primary Bull Run water supply last week. "This was an unusual run of groundwater." said Water Bureau Administrator David Shaff. "When intense rain in the Bull Run causes excessive turbidity, that rain is generally followed by more rain which flushes the turbidity out. In this case, there was no more rain, so the levels of turbidity in the watershed remained above acceptable serving levels. Flushing has taken a bit longer than normal." While both of the bureau's water sources, the Bull Run watershed and the Columbia South Shore Well Field (CSSWF) meet and exceed all federal drinking water standards, the bureau relies primarily on the Bull Run source to provider customers with drinking water. The CSSWF is maintained as an emergency back-up for event

I Give My Heart to Two Tarts

by northwest nola
IMG_7871 I tried Two Tarts today. Let me be more specific; I tried two cookies at the Two Tarts Bakery today. I tried the oatmeal peanut butter cream and the s'mores. Holy cats I'm in love. I'm glad that these cookies are rich and little because if they were any less rich, I could eat more than my fair share's worth of their deliciousness. And if they were any bigger I'd probably break into the sugar sweats eating them. Two Tarts started at the Portland Farmer's Market and now has a retail location on NW 23rd. So, now every single time I walk down NW 23rd, which is often since i live right here, I will have to walk by the store, which is a devilish temptation for me. And I will be inevitably haunted by thoughts of oatmeal peanut butter cream cookies swimming in my head. And I will need to stop and get one. And then I'll have to try some other flavor and eventually I'll grow big as a house eating Two Tarts cookies -- or "artisan sweets for the soul," as they say. Devils! Or, Ang

Water Bureau Temporarily Turns Off Bull Run Water Supply

by jenniferd
wellfield_1 The Water Bureau temporarily turned off the Bull Run water supply system this morning due to increased turbidity in the watershed. The bureau activated groundwater wells in the Columbia South Shore Well Field to temporarily serve water to Portland. Recent heavy rains and increased stream flows in the Bull Run watershed have contributed to this rapid increase in turbidity. Turbidity is a measurement of the cloudiness of (drinking) water by suspended particles. Portland is one of six large drinking water systems in the country that does not filter its water supply. The city is able to comply with federal drinking water regulations by continuously meeting a set of filtration avoidance criteria. Portland has been able to consistently meet these criteria, but it occasionally has to shut down the Bull Run system and operate from its backup groundwater supply when storms and other natural disturbances in the Bull Run reservoirs increase the turbidity. The Surface Water Treatment Rule

Mmmm.... Nob Hill Burgers

by northwest nola
nob hill So, coming home from work today, I find myself craving nothing but a Nob Hill (Bar & Grill) burger. MMMM... can you taste it? A perfectly cooked, juicy beef patty topped in anything I want and nothing I don't want. And the fries? Divine! I think it will be the perfect, greasy end to a long Wednesday. Now, understand that this blogger does not eat burgers regularly -- or even often. In fact, I don't even eat red meat; except for burgers at Nob Hill. They are just that good. Why do I love it so much? It has something to do with the dive-y feeling of the place, mixed with the terse service people and the delicious food. I guess it makes for an all out entertaining and delicious dining experience. And the smoke? Well, that will be going away soon, but even I (the self-proclaimed anti-smoking queen of the world) can deal with it until then, to wrap my mouth around a Nob Hill. It's worth it, I promise. I'll be there for dinner tonight? You?   nn

New Boutique, Amai Unmei, A Must Visit

by northwest nola
5307fuschia A friend of mine recently opened up a great boutique on NW 23rd, Amai Unmei . I know I'm partial, but what a cool store! When I found out she was opening up shop right down the street from me, I was excited. But when I walked in to her brand spanking new lair o'fashion, I was even more excited, as I totally got it. This lady is in the fashion business for a reason; because she gets fashion. Not only do the the fashions rock, but the store itself is gorgeous. It is clean and bright. You feel like you can get your shopping done while you're there. I also think it's neat that Allison, the owner/designer, spends a fair amount of time manning the mothership. How cool to walk into a store and actually speak with the designer who made the dress you're about to buy. I spent a good twenty minutes salivating over the rich silky dresses and trendy winter coats, while silently deciding what I'm not going to buy at other stores this month in order to buy one of Allison's dresses. Three Monkeys -- Expanded and Even Cooler

by northwest nola
IMG_6842 I went by one of my favorite stores today -- Northwest Portland's Three Monkeys. Recently, they expanded their store, combining what was once Three Monkeys (vintage housewares) and Three More Monkeys (clothes) into one giant Three Monkeys store. And I know I'm partial because I already loved this store to begin with, but I love it even more in its newly expanded space. The new space is larger, warm, welcoming and calls to your inner shopper. Maybe it's because there are all sorts of bright and shiny objects to choose from; maybe it's because I like that vintage-y style of decor, but something about the new store is worth at least a look -- especially as the holiday season comes rushing upon us. As far as fashion goes, they just got in a giant selection of holiday dresses, so if you're in the market for one, take a gander at their selection. Since I am a "touch" shopper (I like to touch appealing fabrics and such) I was in a little paradise of sorts trying to find a dress f

by geoffk
IMG_1460 Voicebox Karaoke opened its doors this week with a unique concept that is an extremely welcome addition to the Portland nightlife scene and stands out in the crowd of Portland Karaoke options. Comprised of six private rooms (The smallest holds 8 and the largest 24), Voicebox gives you the ability to have a karaoke bar experience with just a few close friends. Each room is equipped with its own karaoke system (complete with two mics) and features high end sound and display systems. The State of Oregon Pinot

by stockboy
WK-AN376_TASTIN_D_20081023195707 In a recent Wall Street Journal article, Oregon wines, especially our Pinot Noir, were reviewed. "We are delighted to report that Oregon Pinot continues its upward trajectory. The difference in the wines over the years is remarkable. We found again and again in this tasting that the wines have developed a confidence and depth that beautifully complement their lovely fruit. The wines have not only a purity of fruit but a purity of vision that is very attractive. Like Burgundy itself, these are wines that speak softly to the more romantic parts of our being." The entire article can be read at Wall Street Journal .
