Special Birthday at Neighbors West-Northwest

by pearlgirl
dahlia-primary We're celebrating a special birthday at Neighbors West-Northwest today. Dahlia Mae—Executive Director Mark Sieber's beloved four-legged pal—is celebrating her ninth birthday. She's donned her vintage 1955 party hat to mark the occasion, although I'm pretty sure it will make another cameo at Anne Dufay's going away party on July 8. Stop in, meet the NWNW crew and wish Dahlia Mae a happy birthday. They don't bite (and Dahlia Mae wouldn't even think of it). Promise!     Photo: Roxanne Mossman      Happy Birthday Dahlia Mae!

Isobel's Clubhouse Holiday Closure

by nancy
Isobels_Clubhouse Isobel's Clubhouse  is closed from July 2nd through July 6th. We'll re-open on July 7th. Happy 4th of July to all.  Families told us that they'd like us to organize more special events throughout the summer. So we're replacing many of our 'drop-in' sessions with events that require an RSVP. If you'd like to be on our email distribution list to have an opportunity to RSVP for these events, please email us .

Sign of the Times in the Pearl District?

by shooter
isl-primary Change has come to the Pearl District skyline. Recently, a new Hawaiian Air Banner appeared on the south side of the Irving Street Lofts , which is visible as you walk or drive north on NW 14th Avenue. The banner covers the area where the phrase Irving Street Lofts once appeared. As you might suspect, neighbors were surprised by this change, and at least one resident from the Avenue Lofts has complained to the Pearl District Neighborhood Association . The Bureau of Development Services has also received a complaint.         Irving Street Lofts Sign, Before (Left) and After (Right)

RACC Seeks Proposals for Artistic Projects in 2010

by pearlgirl
image001 Do you know what Hand2Mouth Theatre , NW Film Center and Miracle Theatre Group have in common? Aside from being fine artists, they're all recipients of grants from the Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC). Now, you're invited to join this esteemed group and submit a proposal for an artistic project planned for 2010: The Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC) invites nonprofit organizations and individual artists in Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas Counties to submit proposals for artistic projects and cultural events that are planned for calendar year 2010. "Intent to Apply" forms must be submitted online through RACC's website before 5:00 p.m. on August 5, 2009. For 14 years, RACC "Project Grants" have enhanced and supported a wide range of artistic activities throughout the Portland tri-county area (including Clackamas, Multnomah, and Washington Counties). Kearney Plaza Pedestrian Corridor Gets A Makeover

by shooter
kearny-plantings-primary In July 2008, the Kearney Plaza pedestrian corridor became a testing ground for artificial turf. This particular green brownspace had long been a maintenance nightmare for the Hoyt Street Yards Community Association (HSYCA).. Poor drainage and extremely heavy dog traffic required the sod to be replaced every few years. Even then, the result was a boggy mess—until SYNLawn entered the picture. Bryce Stephens, Senior Property Manager at Multi-Services, discovered SYNLawn on the Street of Dreams . Because it looked so real and was highly recommended for use in dog areas, Stephens proposed testing the artificial turf in the Kearney green brownspace. Over the past year, the patch of SYNLawn was left to the environment and the, um, dogs. As a frequent traveler in this corridor, I think the SYNLawn held up remarkably well. The more use it got, the better it looked (the grass starts with a shiny look that wears down over time)—unlike the other two patches of natural grass
