Notes of Interest » December 28, 2008

swan-island-wind-tunnel While watching the snow melt over the holiday weekend, we did a little scanning of local news stories.  You'll find our list of interesting news links below. The photo is an aerial shot of the Swan Island wind tunnel mentioned in one of the stories.  The reason it was built on the lagoon is that the water acts as a filter, removing particles from the air before it enters the air intake (the black square on the end of the building).  How this works I'm not exactly sure, but that's what I've been told.  If anyone can explain this please comment!

Planning Commission Members Tour North Portland With Neighbors

by shooter
kenton-pb Planning Commission members took a close look at North Portland last Tuesday to learn about the development issues affecting the city's fifth-quadrant.   The tour included representatives from each of the eight neighborhoods that make up North Portland.  The goal was to make sure city planners were familiar with North Portland's issues as they work to update Portland's Comprehensive Plan .

The four-hour bus tour was intended to give commissioners and planners a "visual frame of reference", according to Arianne Sperry, the North Portland liaison with the Planning Bureau .  Many of the commission members haven't been exposed to the issues in North Portland. During the tour neighborhood representatives pointed out specific issues in their neighborhoods.  The most common opinion among neighborhoods was that North Portland is full of under-utilized commercial properties.  Many properties are used for "transient" rather tha

Take the Streetcar Survey

by Trace
streetcar The Portland Office of Transportation (PDOT) is currently drafting a Streetcar System Plan, with the intent of creating a citywide network. The purpose of the Streetcar System Plan (SSP) District Working Group process that is currently underway is to engage the public in the beginning of a long-range planning effort that will identify future streetcar corridors with the highest potential in a long-term implementation strategy. Specifically, the goal of the NE District Working Group process is to identify where community support for potential streetcar corridors is located in NE Portland. Currently, volunteers like us are doing community outreach to gauge the level of support in Northeast Portland along various corridors such as Broadway/Weidler, MLK Blvd, Alberta St, and 82nd Ave. The city has stated that new streetcar corridors will be prioritized in areas where community support exists.

Interstate corridor plan approved, neighbors reactions mixed

by shooter
It does seem that the Height Opportunity part of the plan was inserted close to the end of the process with little opportunity for public input. Overall, however, I still think the plan is good and will provide good growth opportunities for the areas within the plan.
