Adding Sparkle to Holiday Parties » Nothing Says Thank You Like a Great Bottle of Wine
by pearlgirl
So, you're invited to a holiday party that starts in less than an hour, and you're frantic because you haven't the slightest idea what the host likes. If you were raised in a Japanese family like I was, you know it can be a little embarrassing to show up to someone's house empty-handed. Knowing that wine is a well-received guest in most homes, I think I might have the answer to quell your anxieties—bubbles. Whether you're taking wine to the party as a gift for the host, or to be enjoyed that evening, there are few wines that are as fail-safe as these festive tongue ticklers. Most often, sparklers are drunk before the meal, and they often go well with hors d'oeuvres, so you're safe there. If the host doesn't drink alcohol, or doesn't like the sparkler you bring, he can re-gift it the next time he goes to a party. Hmm. Thankfully, there are fine examples in every price range and are available from many different wine regions around the globe, although the label laws in various a

Restaurants Dropping Like Flies in North/Northeast Portland
by NoPo Ness
Today I got some very bad news—one of my all-time favorite restaurants in North Portland, Encanto, has closed its doors. Apparently, this last weekend was the last hoorah for this sopapilla-laden, New Mexican cuisine haven. Michael Martinez and his wife owned this beautiful, friendly and warm little joint located on N. Lombard. Martinez's menu and skill in the kitchen was matched equally by a full bar featuring some of the best sangria I've ever had and tequila heavy cocktails. Word on the street is Martinez sold his business and it will soon be re-tooled to an eatery called Cafe Cubano. I hope they have better luck than Martinez did but that seems almost impossible in this market. Especially in light of the fact that Martinez's Encanto was a critic's pet, with everyone in town lauding his inventive and fresh menu. My head still reeling from this news, I took a moment to mourn the loss (which for a foodie and a local food reviewer is a crushing blow) but then what do I

Is Your Neighborhood A Food Desert?
by pearlgirl
According to Wikipedia, "A food desert is a district with little or no access to foods needed to maintain a healthy diet , but often served by plenty of fast food restaurants." It may surprise you to learn that there are such places in Portland. Food deserts are problematic because they prevent access in three forms: physical, financial and mental (food knowledge). A recent article in the Oregonian chronicles one family's exhaustive journey for one of life's necessities. It's pretty disheartening. Neighbors, is your neighborhood a food desert? How should the problem be addressed? Ideas???

Thai Terrace Rocks—Watch Your Back Thai Ginger
by NoPo Ness
Here in P-town we are chock full of tasty Thai food. So much so that one of my editors recently put it like this, "Thai food in this town is like the Burger King of gentrification." While this may ring true it still doesn't stop me from wanting to chat up my favs up here in the North end. Here in North Portland, Thai food is plentiful, which is why it is so surprising that one of my old favs has become such a pain that my last meal was returned and I refuse to step foot in there anymore. The place I am speaking about is Thai Ginger on N Lombard. Once a haven where some of the best Thai in NoPo could be found, it has over the past few years dropped its standards. First opened by husband and wife team, James and Noo Gerritsen, when they ran things this place was my favorite Thai spot in the 5Q. My Pad Thai was consistent, the curries delightful and service was fast and friendly (especially to go.) A few years ago the Gerritsens sold Thai Ginger to the current owners and thin

Pumpkin Bread Pudding w/candied maple pecans and whipped cream
by NoPo Ness
I love bread pudding. I am haunted by the smell of that cinnamon laced, raisin-laden, custardy treat and have been since my childhood when my mother often made this warm and comforting dish. I had no idea, as a child, that mom did so because it was a super affordable dessert to make for us kids as we clamored for sweets during a Reagan-era recession. Surprisingly, all you really need for a basic bread pudding is some stale bread, a few eggs, some milk, sugar and spice and you have a delectable dessert for the whole family. Over the years I have experimented with my bread pudding recipe and created quite a high brow repertoire using ingredients like currants instead of raisins, pannetone or croissants in place of week old white bread. I have added chunks of dagoba chocolate, flecks of lavendar and lemon rind. I have also topped it with homemade ice cream, hard, chocolate and caramel sauces and savored the tart juxtaposition of raspberry liquor poured straight atop a deep, dark chocola
