Hermitage is a Home

by Julie D
jennifer2 I dropped into Hermitage this week and had my usual head spinning desire for everything in the shop. Jennifer June is the talented proprietress of Hermitage, with an exquisite eye for the stupendously cool and unique. One of the things Jennifer does best is bring work from independent artists living outside of Portland into Portland. I like that when I go to her shop, I can say, who is this by? Instead of ... oh I love this, it is by so and so, right? While Hermitage is the home to many lovely home accessories, the main focus here is on wallpaper. Jennifer retails some of the most unique and special wallpaper designers I have come across. Much is handmade, screen printed, block printed or hand painted. A perusal of her books made me consider wallpapering my whole house. But I have refrained. For now. If this sounds too good to be true, it is. Jennifer will be closing Hermitage's Portland doors in January and relocating to Seattle. I am not sure what Seattle has done to deserve suc

Three Monkeys -- Expanded and Even Cooler

by northwest nola
IMG_6842 I went by one of my favorite stores today -- Northwest Portland's Three Monkeys. Recently, they expanded their store, combining what was once Three Monkeys (vintage housewares) and Three More Monkeys (clothes) into one giant Three Monkeys store. Maybe it's because there are all sorts of bright and shiny objects to choose from; maybe it's because I like that vintage-y style of decor, but something about the new store is worth at least a look -- especially as the holiday season comes rushing upon us. As far as fashion goes, they just got in a giant selection of holiday dresses, so if you're in the market for one, take a gander at their selection. Since I am a "touch" shopper (I like to touch appealing fabrics and such) I was in a little paradise of sorts trying to find a dress f

Vintage Shoes & Paris Hilton

by kerry
I’ve lived in the Clinton St. neighborhood coming up on six years. We bought a house a few blocks off “the main drag,” without even knowing there was “a main drag.” We just liked the house. So when we stumbled upon the bars, coffee shop, video store, theater and more just blocks away, it was a happy day. Since then, the neighborhood has gotten even more chic with the addition of a wine bar, bakery, art gallery, brewpub, yoga studio and more. I am hoping someone will open a dress shop – I promise to spend too much money there. You can count on me.But ‘til then (and after then, really), there is the divinity called Xtabay, a great shop for all things vintage, on Clinton just off 26th Ave. I’m not a vintage girl, per se – I err on the side of Banana Republic way too often. Until about a year ago, I’d just admire Xtabay’s gorgeous window displays and keep walking, thinking it just wasn’t my thing. Until, that is, I sa
