Brody on Broadway
by arthur smid
"Please make mistakes," Brad Fortier, comedian and educational director at the Brody Theater explains, "they're essential to this art, because a lot of those mistakes can become very brilliant comedy if we utilize rather than minimize the mistakes." Fortier talks casually with students, "Improv training really opens a different way of being - when you eradicate insecurities around mistakes. With improv we're breaking social norms to get to this comedy." People come to the show to be entertained and maybe, with a desire to participate. One of the attractions of the theater is a chance to enroll in classes, overcome your fear of speaking in public, and be spontaneously creative with people. The Brody Theater has been active in Portland for twelve years and just leased a new home at 16 NW Broadway. It's in the lower part of the Broadway Hotel, between Helen's Market and Ichiban Sushi. The Housing Authority of Portland welcomed the theater to Old Town in hopes

Miracle Theatre’s La Carpa del Maestro
by shooter
We recently attended the opening performance of Miracle Theatre 's annual Day of the Dead production, La Carpa del Maestro . Miracle Theatre has the longest running Day of the Dead celebration in Portland. Full disclosure, Neighborhood Notes is a sponsor of Miracle Theatre's 25th season. This year's Carpa continues with the tradition of a variety show, but the addition of a plot unifies the acts and gives the show more weight. The story is the relationship of a master and his apprentice.
We thoroughly enjoyed the show. It was funny and thoughtful, with dancing, acrobatics, and short skits all done in skeletal makeup. What makes it a cohesive performance is how the master/apprentice relationship is woven throughout the performance. Want to know more, read Willamette Week's review of the show.
If you'd like to see La Carpa del Maestro it runs through November 9, tickets are available online . Check out th

TBA Day Four » Mike Daisey, Monopoly
by shooter
Mike Daisey is probably the best storyteller I've ever seen: funny, smart, subversive, bold, and thoughtful. Daisey weaves four stories into one with Monopoly. We learn about Nikola Tesla's war with Thomas Edison over electricity, Microsoft's antitrust lawsuit, the secret history of the board game Monopoly, and the story of how Wal-Mart gutted Daisey's hometown in Maine. He tells these four stories in parallel, in a single monologue that explores the darker side of capitalism.Daisey will be performing his most recent monologue, "If You See Something Say Something" Thursday through Sunday. In it he tackles the secret history of the Department of Homeland Security. Mike Daisey is a must see.

TBA Day Three » Lemon Anderson and Ten Eight Tiny Dances
by shooter
Day three of TBA had two surprises. We went to Lemon Anderson's show, not really knowing what to expect, and found a terrific storyteller and poet. Ten Tiny Dances turned into a "lite" version with two of the performances bowing out. These things happen with live performances and while there may have been only eight dances, they were far from "lite".Lemon Anderson
Lemon Anderson's "The Beautiful Struggle" is his personal memoir told through a blend of hip-hop and urban poetry. You learn about his growing up with a mother who was an addict—and later stricken with HIV. Upon her death, with no one to care for him, he turned to dealing crack to survive. During a stint in jail, he discovered his love of words and poetry—his purpose in life. Lemon's performance was brilliant. He is smart, funny, thoughtful, and direct. His ability to fully portray a variety of characters

TBA Round Up Round Up
by shooter
Most publications have their TBA picks, highlights, or complete guides. There's lots of good info out there, so I thought I'd round up all the TBA round ups I could find. Now, you can make an informed decision about what you want to see!The Portland Mercury's Destination Fun is a list of highlights for the next few days, and their amazingly thorough guide to the entire festival is one of the best resources out there.
The Portland Tribune talks about Mike Daisey and Kenny Mellman and Bridget Everett .
The Oregonian mentions Antony and the Johnsons (we are going to that tonight and are VERY excited about it) and Neal Medlyn (who is hysterical). Here's a link to our previous post about Neil along with a link to a video. Brian Libby talks about visual artists at TBA.
Willamette Week's T.B.Ah-ha! is their highlight list, including that important list of FREE events.
Ultra talks about Sojour
