Achieve Your Fitness Resolution For 2009

by TeachStreet
TS_Tree How many years have gone by where your New Year's resolution was to exercise and get in shape , but by the end of the year you've found yourself having to renew that promise?

If you aren't a hardcore athlete , and don't plan to be, then yoga lessons may be the genie in a bottle that makes your New Year's wishes come true in 2009.

Especially if you have prior joint and bone injuries, doing plyometrics, weightlifting and running on a treadmill can put a lot of strain on your vulnerable body parts.  The non-abrasive, body flexing, joint strengthening art of yoga is just what the doctor orders.  The dual benefit of yoga over many other forms of exercises is that it is a powerful mental discipline as well.  Yoga means union, which through my interpretation is the union of the mind and body.  Practicing meditation has many great health benefits beyond the physical, as many doctors claim.&

It's No Surprise that Portland's the #1 Greenest City, Again

by TeachStreet
TS_Tree Every year for the last three years, Portland has reached the very top of the most sustainable cities list produced by SustainLane .
There should really be no surprise that Portland keeps beating its rivals. Take for instance Adam Boesel, and his new fitness project, The Green Microgym .
The Green Microgym houses four stationary bikes that produce between 200 and 600 watts of electricity per hour, several other stationary bikes that are connected to generators that Boesel built, treadmills that run off 30% less power, a yoga studio with cork flooring, efficient ceiling fans and solar panel awnings.

The sustainability of The Green Microgym provides environmentally conscious physical trainers and their trainees a place they can feel good about supporting due to its limited impact on the environment. Let's not forget

Portland Water Bureau Installs New Walking Path at Powell Butte

by jenniferd
powellbutte_meadow The Water Bureau's Powell Butte Reservoir and Nature Park is a hot spot in SE Portland. It is used by Portlanders of all ages to hike, walk their dogs, etc. Until this week, however, the only way for park-goers to access Powell Butte was to drive or walk up the long access road. Having an abundance of cars and people using the road is a bit of a safety hazard and has become a concern for the Water Bureau. To alleviate the problem, Water Bureau crews have spent the last two weeks building a 2,200 foot walking path and retaining wall, stretching from Powell Blvd. to the top of Powell Butte. The bureau hopes that pedestrians will use the walking path as an alternative route to access the park and thus eliminate the car/pedestrian issue. And if you're someone who hasn't yet taken a trip to Powell Butte, what are you waiting for? It contains 608 acres of thriving, green forest and rolling grassland and nine miles of hiking trails- and it's right in the middle of the city! On a clear da

Portland Residents to Race 118 miles to Fundraise for Children’s Camp

by Jennifer
Camp Ukandu was founded on the fundamental belief that children with cancer can benefit from sharing a traditional camp experience. Sponsored by the American Cancer Society (ACS), Camp Ukandu has been providing these children with a week of laughs and smiles for over 20 years. Located on the beautiful Oregon coast, Camp Ukandu is run by volunteers, from its camp staff to its nurses and physicians. Campers tackle arts and crafts, weaving, boating, fishing, swimming, field games, beach play, and archery—all under the care of specially trained adult staff and 24-hour medical specialists. Each year over 100 children attend this camp free of charge, made possible by individual donations through the ACS. Camp Ukandu is a magical place where kids can just be kids again. The McCarty’s TransRockies Race for Cancer is a fundraising program aimed at giving the gift of a week of camp to a child that lives with cancer. For the TransRockies Race for Cancer , Owen and Jennifer McCart
