Notes of Interest » December 28, 2008

by shooter
swan-island-wind-tunnel While watching the snow melt over the holiday weekend, we did a little scanning of local news stories.  You'll find our list of interesting news links below. The photo is an aerial shot of the Swan Island wind tunnel mentioned in one of the stories.  The reason it was built on the lagoon is that the water acts as a filter, removing particles from the air before it enters the air intake (the black square on the end of the building).  How this works I'm not exactly sure, but that's what I've been told.  If anyone can explain this please comment!

Puppy Love » Happy Hour for Animal Lovers (Save the Date!)

by pearlgirl
OR207.11658467-1-pn Puppy love: call yourself an animal lover? We'll drink to that (with you, of course). Vault Martini and Neighborhood Notes have joined forces in hosting Portland's exclusive monthly happy hour for animal lovers. Every last Monday of the month, Vault will donate 15% of event proceeds to our favorite Portland animal non-profit organizations. Happy hour cocktails and food will be offered 5-8:30 p.m. Mark your calendar for Monday, November 24th, when we'll raise our glasses (and forks) to the Pixie Project . Pixie Project facilitates adoption and healthy lifestyles for thousands of dogs and cats each year. Puppy party favors will be given to the first 20 guests. Big thanks to everybody who joined us in October for "Cocktails for Kitties," benefiting the Feral Cat Coalition . Your happy hour donation has contributed to "kitty contraception" citywide. Cheers!

Three Monkeys -- Expanded and Even Cooler

by northwest nola
IMG_6842 I went by one of my favorite stores today -- Northwest Portland's Three Monkeys. Recently, they expanded their store, combining what was once Three Monkeys (vintage housewares) and Three More Monkeys (clothes) into one giant Three Monkeys store. And I know I'm partial because I already loved this store to begin with, but I love it even more in its newly expanded space. The new space is larger, warm, welcoming and calls to your inner shopper. Maybe it's because there are all sorts of bright and shiny objects to choose from; maybe it's because I like that vintage-y style of decor, but something about the new store is worth at least a look -- especially as the holiday season comes rushing upon us. As far as fashion goes, they just got in a giant selection of holiday dresses, so if you're in the market for one, take a gander at their selection. Since I am a "touch" shopper (I like to touch appealing fabrics and such) I was in a little paradise of sorts trying to find a dress f

Essential Ingredients of Great Neighborhood Breakfast Spots

by pearlgirl
brunch-and-breakfast-tips-7 Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, especially when it's shared with good friends at a favorite local breakfast spot. But, breakfast can easily become the most frustrating meal of the day if you pick the wrong restaurant. We all know this place: the notoriously long wait and poor service makes otherwise stellar food regrettable. I used to be convinced that a long wait and poor service were hallmarks of a great neighborhood breakfast spot—they're so busy, it must be worth it! Not so much anymore. Over time, I've learned to separate the, um, buckwheat from the chaff. In addition to consistently delicious food and coffee, I've learned that truly great neighborhood breakfast joints share some other key ingredients: they serve breakfast every day, have a diverse mix of patrons, are reasonably priced, and, above all, they have an efficient process.  Breakfast Served Daily Good food is not an accident. Great breakfast restaurants serve it every day, not ju

Dog Boxes on Pearl District Decks

by pdxdog
Poop Deck A great number of Pearl District residents have dogs, as we all know.  Many have smaller dogs who can use potty boxes.  I've heard recently that there have been some objections to residents/owners placing these boxes on their decks. If they are kept clean, does anyone know why this would be a problem?  It appears that some homeowners are creating problems for those dog owners. Interested in reponses to this issue.

The Sentinel’s Doggie Tales

by shooter
dogs Doggie Tales is a cute title for a bold piece of journalism. The Sentinel 's publisher and managing editor, Cornelius Swart , addresses an issue that I, and I'm sure many, are not aware even exists. When you think of dogs in Portland, you think of one of the most dog-friendly cities in the country. Dogs are part of the family, treated like surrogate children—even dressed in doggie clothes. Swart and Judith Mowry , one of the creators of the Gentrification Restorative Listening Project , have teamed up to address an issue for many African-Americans. It's the perception that as whites move into an area they believe isn't safe; they get a dog for protection. African-Americans view dogs as a wedge issue. In getting the dog for protection, you view everyone as a suspect. The dog is being used as a barrier. The issue is partly a gentrification issue, but it also relates historically to how dogs were used by whites to intimidate African-Americans. Swart has held a

by pearlgirl
burger Simon says, "Raise your hand for Hollywood"  You won't find nasty Simon Cowell, but you could spot a future American Idol among the crowd of kids competing in Portland's largest Simon Says contest Saturday, September 13. The contest will be held in the Wells Fargo Bank parking lot, 4233 N.E. Sandy Boulevard, and is one of many events planned throughout the afternoon at the Hollywood Boosters' Bun Fest 2008. "We know of no other organized Simon Says contest that's taken place in Portland, so this is guaranteed to be the largest," said John Perkins, Perkins Architectural and Hollywood Booster organizer. "We're inviting children of all ages be a part of this first-ever event. Everyone will win a prize just for participating." Local singer-entertainer extraordinaire Tony Starlight, of the Tony Starlight Supperclub & Lounge in the Hollywood District, will emcee the event.
