Voicebox Karaoke Opens in NW

by geoffk
IMG_1460 Voicebox Karaoke opened its doors this week with a unique concept that is an extremely welcome addition to the Portland nightlife scene and stands out in the crowd of Portland Karaoke options. Comprised of six private rooms (The smallest holds 8 and the largest 24), Voicebox gives you the ability to have a karaoke bar experience with just a few close friends. Each room is equipped with its own karaoke system (complete with two mics) and features high end sound and display systems. Voicebox Karaoke creator Scott Simon has transformed the old Tao of Tea space into an extremely modern and hip night time destination (featuring the larger than life comic art from the Pander Brothers).  He drew his inspiration from his experiences in karaoke clubs in Korea and in San Francisco. Rates start at $7 per person per hour (each room has a minimum number of people required). Voicebox serves beer, wine and sake in the center bar as well as offer in suite service so you don't have to pu

Butterfly wings are causing hurricanes at the Leftbank Project

by CHYCHELE
BUFFALO-HERD-YNP. The leftbank project was fortunate enough to play host to "The Butterfly Effect: A Visionary Gesture by Leslie B. Durst" . A quick google of "butterfly effect" comes up with two answers: 1.) a property of chaotic systems (as the atmosphere) by which small changes in initial conditions can lead to large-scale and unpredictable variation in the future state of the system 2.) an Ashton Kutcher movie about a missing car and how it messed up his universe or his hair or something The first definition is closer to PICA 's hope for their Butterfly Effect. Ten years ago Leslie B. Durst began commissioning twelve pieces of art from a different artist each year and giving them to people all over the world. Some of the recipients were actively involved members of the art community, some were not (this is where the butterfly effect comes into play). To kick off the showing, Cloud Eye Control was on hand to debut their new show "Under Polaris". T

Street Songs in Old Town Chinatown

by the nice brian
audio I love music. This cart was left unattended for a good while yesterday. The owner managed to plug in his stereo set to some outlet and play the radio for many of us to enjoy. It was audible from about two blocks away.

Kid Friendly TBA

by nancy
tiny-tba-primary Wow - yesterday was an amazing day for kids and the  Time Based Art Festival .  We biked up to  tiny tba  a few minutes before 11:00, and there was already a line out the door. Excited kids hopping with anticipation and their sleepy-looking parents . We all experienced that moment of shock as you walk from bright sunlight into a dimly lit building. And then the noise of tiny feet running to explore the space. A stage, a film projector, DJ equipment, cookies, crafts... And that was just the inside.
My child was not interested in the films being played on the stage, but very interested in drawing on film and then watching it play through the rickety film projector with  Indiekid Films . I found myself struggling to describe, to a child only familiar with digital video, what exactly this contraption was. Film was hanging over rafters, artists were hand splicing, and the machine rattled as it projected images a

Gateway area scores Ventura Park concerts

by shooter
gateway-music-primary (Reprinted with the permission of David Ashton, East PDX News ) Story and photos by David F. Ashton
Although outer East Portland has numerous City parks - many of them large enough to accommodate thousands of people - the Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) "Music in the Parks" concerts haven't made it east of 92nd Avenue - until now. Under stormy-looking clouds and with the threat of rain, the first Gateway-area "Music in the Park" program began on Thursday, August 21, at Ventura Park, on SE Stark Street. But, it didn't rain - in fact, the sun came out! Slowly, an audience of nearly 200 gathered, seated on lawn chairs and blankets, to enjoy top-quality entertainment for the first time in their park.     Chief Kop Kevin Minkoff warmed up the audience at the first-ever Ventura Park concert series   Before the show, we spoke with one of the musicians, and also one of the organizers of the event, ever-faithful Gateway bo

5th Avenue Grows Grass—National Park(ing) Day

by pearlgirl
greened-spaces A surprising “green” transformation will take place in Portland on Friday, September 19th – one that will give Portlanders another reason to leave their cars at home. Parking spaces downtown may be sprouting grass… and a bench, or better! In an effort to reclaim the streets for National PARK(ing) Day , Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants’ Portland properties are spearheading local efforts for this one-day global event where artists, citizens and businesses temporarily transform parking spots into parks for the day in an effort to raise awareness and funds for the Trust For Public Land (TPL). TPL is the only national nonprofit dedicated to conserving land for public recreation and enjoyment.

Kimpton’s Hotel Monaco Portland , Hotel Vintage Plaza , Pazzo Ristorante , Red Star and other sponsors have collaborated to close down and convert an entire block of parking spaces into more than a dozen parks on SW 5th Ave. between Washington and

TBA Day Two » Antony and the Johnsons, Neal Medlyn

by shooter
113-Neal-Medlyn-9-5-2008-Primary TBA is definitely about contrasts.  In the course of a couple of hours, we went from the dreamy, haunting voice of Antony Hegarty to three guys re-creating Beyonce's 2007 live concert DVD.

Antony and the Johnsons

This was an amazing performance: a unique marriage of Antony's hypnotic vocals, powerful lyrics, and the lush sound of the orchestra. Antony's performance was somewhat awkward. He lacked the stage presence that I normally associate with such a powerful voice—but somehow that made the performance even more compelling.
Neal Medlyn

There is something so wrong, and yet so right, about a skinny white guy re-creating a Beyonce concert.  It was funny and mesmerizing at the same time.  The surreal nature of it was captivating, and the energy that Medlyn put into the performance was exciting.  He had the audience cheering and waving their hands as if they were watching Beyonce.  I think the photos t

TBA Day One » The March and The Works

by shooter
tba-day-1 Day one started with the re-creation of the Anna Halprin's Blank Placard Happening .  About 400 people met at PNCA in the Pearl and marched across the Broadway Bridge to the Leftbank Building for the grand opening of The Works.

The Blank Placard Happening was well attended and really fun to be part of. Along the way, there were all kinds of reactions from people:  puzzled looks, shouts of support, and, of course, questions.  Here are some images that I salvaged from my failed compact flash card . (F#$%@&G technology!).            Upon arrival at The Works, you're greeted by the Zoo Bombers' bike sculpture .  You should ride your bike to The Works just so you can see this.  Very cool.     Once inside the works you can see the visual arts exhibits, such as Jacob Hartman's -------- Head .                 Final
