Here is our daily list of interesting links. One of the stories is about land that University of Portland has purchased. I believe the land is the McCormick & Baxter Creosote Plant superfund site. It has been a great site for photography, and most recently even used as a small skateboard park. I guess it's good the land will be used, but it's a great example of urban decay and I'll hate to see that go.

The vegan Paradox
by Veritable Vegan
With a hankering for french fries and a Chinook Book coupon burning a hole in my pocket (15% off!), my partner and I decided to swing by Paradox Cafe for a quick bite to eat before heading home from work.Since most of my memories of Paradox were of waiting for a table, I was really pleased to see that the restaurant had completed its recent expansion into the adjacent storefront. Despite all the organic this and alternative that, Paradox continues to simply be down-home comfy -- great food without the 'tude.
Although not exclusively vegetarian, most of Paradox 's made-from-scratch menu is already or can be made vegan. What's even better is that those options are all clearly spelled out on the menu, which features all-day breakfast, soups, salads, sandwiches and burgers. Don't expect any frilly dress-ups here, though; the vegan options are mostly hardworking substitutions of tofu or tempeh. Not that there's anything wrong with that, because Paradox does thi

A Mexican Vegan
by Veritable Vegan
After the recent closing of several vegan/vegetarian restaurants, I am really excited about the opening a month or so ago of Los Gorditos II, an all vegan taqueria truck that is muy delicioso ! From tacos to burritos, tostadas to tortas ... it's all great -- and a great value, too. Today a friend and I tried the "regular burrito" -- a flour tortilla with beans, rice, tomato, avocado onion and cilantro ($4.50, or $5 with vegan cheese and sour cream) that was enough for two meals. We also sampled the regular tacos (2 for only $1.75 and enough for lunch) and, best of all, was the rolled tacos: four fried rolled tortillas filled with potatoes and Soyrizo topped with lettuce, tomato, onion and cilantro ($4.50). Maybe because I added the vegan cheese and sour cream, but mine came with rice and beans, too, making for a huge dinner for only $5. If you don't care of the distinctive taste of Soyrizo, you can also choose from tofu, grilled veggies or soy curls for any of the item

Sellwood-Moreland's Only Tea House
by evil genius
Jade Teahouse & Patisserie has opened along Sellwood's bustling "Antique Row" on SE 13th Avenue. This spacious and bright teahouse offers a kid-friendly, savory, sweet, and cozy coffeehouse alternative for residents and travelers through the Sellwood-Moreland neighborhood. Just a few blocks from the traffic of Tacoma Street and the Sellwood Library, Jade opens in time for our much-needed winter warm-ups.
Owner April Ecklund designed the interior herself, from choosing the bamboo-like mosaic tile beneath the counters to the sophisticated, yet cozy furniture. About the assorted knick-knacks for sale, Ecklund says, "I just pick things that amuse me. I hope they amuse someone else too."
All of the loose teas are available for purchase, or you can have them brew up a pot if you want to stay a while. If you're not sure what kind of tea you're in the mood for, Ecklund has them organized in handy magnetic containers by price range and ca

Pita the Vegan
by Veritable Vegan
Usually the need for a quick mid-day bite downtown would lead me to one of the lunch carts, but with the brisk fall weather, I opted today to eat indoors, stopping at Karam Lebanese Cuisine . Although the pumpkin kibbee sounded really intriguing, as did baba ghannouj, today I opted for a simple falafel sandwich. This was a great choice, with a nice balance of savory fried falafel, creamy hummus and tahini, and crunchy tomato, onions and lettuce. Lunchtime service was swift and the price was about $7. The dinner menu has a veggie section, but watch for dishes with dairy. Karam Restaurant is located at 316 SW Stark St., (503) 223-0830.

Broder Cafe — Sweden on Clinton
by shooter
Broder Café is one of those wonderful little places you hear about and eventually get around to trying. (Thanks to Molly at Life+Limb for this recommendation) We stopped in for lunch a while ago and found a warm and cozy atmosphere with friendly service. The food is delicious and not served in humongous portions like so many places. We were quite happy with the Bonde Sandwich and Aebleskiver (Danish pancakes). The Bloody Marys are something else—flavorful, as spicy as you want, and served with home-pickled vegetables.
We had a wonderful time and delicious lunch. Have a look for yourself!

Kenny & Zuke’s Part 2?
by shooter
Both Willamette Week and Food Dude are reporting that Kenny & Zuke's are looking to open a second location and may have already submitted a proposal. Willamette Week claims that the Pastrami Prince's have expressed interest in the building at NW 24th and Thurman, and have a month to sign the lease. The location is right across from St. Honore . Should this come true, there will be another vortex of evil goodness in the NW quadrant.

Pearl District Changes — Exit World Cup, Enter Laughing Planet
by shooter
World Cup Coffee in the Ecotrust Building will close its doors on Saturday. The company said that the Pearl location wasn't performing as well as its other stores. The lagging performance, along with other factors, led to the company's decision to close the store. World Cup's other locations will remain open, including its nearby store and roasting plant at NW 18th and Glisan. The Ecotrust Building is a prime location and you wouldn't expect it to remain empty for long—it's not, it's already leased! Laughing Planet has leased the space and will open a new café later this year. If you're not familiar with Laughing Planet, here's an excerpt from their website: "The Laughing Planet Café is a quick-service restaurant that serves nutritious fare in the form of tasty burritos (aka "PNDs" or "Portable Nutrition Devices"), bowls, soups, salads, smoothies, juices and home-made cookies. We are dedicated to making wholesome food a

No Need to Schlep for Schmears
by pearlgirl
Good Morning Northwesties—how would you like an authentic NY-style bagel for breakfast this morning? I'm having an everything bagel with plain cream cheese, thankyouverymuch . Shush! I'm not being mean—I get that this type of temptation is torture. Fortunately for all of us, Kettleman Bagel Company has opened its second location at 2314 NW Lovejoy. Bagel-icious goodness is just a short walk, bike or streetcar ride away. Why are you still here? Kettleman offers an extensive menu of bagels, schmears and Lox. YUM! Other goodies include Stumptown coffee, WiFi, and a quiet patio. Hopefully they'll add bike parking soon. There's also a large community table and other seating options inside. And, best of all, there's room for a line at the counter. You don't have to stand halfway in and halfway out the doorway, you can keep cool and wait inside.
