Portland Loos Coming Soon...

by jenniferd
loo I can hardly hold it -- the excitement I feel in letting you know that the Portland Loos will make their much awaited debut early this December. What is a Portland Loo, you ask? The Portland Loo is Portland's newest form of relief -- a place to go when you gotta go. No longer will you have to hold it until you get home because conveniently located on the street corner will be on oasis to Portland's bladder stretched coffee fiends -- a bathroom. (You might also have heard them referred to as Leonard's Loos in honor of Commissioner Randy Leonard who has so delicately taken these toities from conception to fruition.) The Portland Loo offers high durability and a unique and balanced blend of privacy and security, all at a cost that is a fraction of current stand-alone restroom models. The Loo can be installed almost anywhere that water and sewer hookups are available. They will be open 24/7 and are ADA accsesible. The Loos are solar powered. The first Loo will be installe

Citywide Accessibility Tool Launched

by where's lulu
logo The new Portland-only web site Where's Lulu is a free, online database where Portlanders can rate and review places and services (mostly businesses) based on their accessibility. Example: Are the curb cuts next to the bus stop in front of a Stumptown Coffee Roasters wheelchair-friendly? A search tool allows for filtering using criteria such as whether nearby public transit options exist. Coming up: The ability to upload photos depicting accessibility or inaccessibility of businesses. We founded the site to provide info making it easier for disabled people to get from point A to point B, as well as to establish higher standards of accessibility for businesses and public places in general. The local disabled community is already on board, with users voicing opinions on everything from just how close a Mac Store is to the MAX line, to the wheelchair maneuverability between aisles at swank Southeast eatery Noble Rot. To join Where's Lulu for free, or to learn more, visit http

Pearl District Pot Puffers

by shooter
toking A resident placed the following notice in the elevator of (anonymous building).  The reason this caught my attention was not that someone was smoking pot in the building, but rather the polite way in which the resident chose to handle the issue.     Notice to (anonymous building) Pot Puffers
Your daily tokes are infiltrating many units at the north end of the building.  Many owners are reporting the smell of pungent weed.
Please do one of the following: Go down to (anonymous park) and toke away Close your windows, put a towel in front of your entry door, and turn on your bathroom exhaust fan Move to another building Distribute stash to other (anonymous building) residents If this is a medical marijuana situation, please notify (anonymous property management firm) so they can alert other resident owners. Most of us don't care what you smoke...we just don't want the smell in our units.

Thank You Typical Course of Action

Planned Parenthood Breaks Ground on New Regional Center

by shooter
ppcw-regional-center After numerous delays and much controversy, Planned Parenthood Columbia Willamette (PPCW) broke ground on its newest clinic and regional service center.  The new building will include 7000 square feet of clinics, regional offices, as well as 5000 square feet of retail space. The 40,000 square foot building will unite the entire administrative staff, currently divided between two buildings, under one roof.  PPCW expects construction of the LEED-Gold building to be completed in late 2009.

PPCW provides reproductive healthcare services to more than 60,000 women, men, and teens at its 11 regional health centers annually.  Its current NE Portland health center operates at capacity 7 days a week.  The new Regional Service Center will give PPCW the capacity to serve over 110,000 patients in the region.

The majority of PPCW patients are low-income, uninsured or underinsured, and rely on providers like Planned Parenthood for basic sexual and r

24 Hour Relief in Old Town

by shooter
roman-pub-toilet The Portland Tribune reports that a public toilet in the Portland Rescue Mission, located in Old Town, is open 24-hours a day.  This should bring relief to many of the homeless in the area, as well as residents and business owners who all encounter the inevitable results of no toilets available.

The restrooms in the mission were renovated with $60,000 of generously donated private funds.  The new toilets include floor drains, stainless steel automatic flush toilets, and exhaust fans.  Public toilets generally fail due to a lack of security, but the mission's round-the-clock front door security ensures the toilets are used for their proper purpose.

Is one 24-hour public toilet enough?  They City's will install the first of its new "stand-alone" toilets on NW Glisan between NW 5th and 6th within the next few weeks.  Randy Leonard has pushed for new public toilets, even working on his own designs.  The difficul

Facility for Mentally Ill to be Built in Ardenwald

by shooter
balfour house It appears that Balfour House, a Secured Residential Facility, will be built in Ardenwald after all.  The City of Milwaukie decided Sept 16 to settle the lawsuit brought against it by the developer, Columbia Care Services, Inc.

Neighbors are not opposed to having a home for the mentally ill in their community.  The issue is this facility would be housing criminally insane patients, some of whom escaped conviction for violent crimes by entering the mental health system and are considered "guilty except for insanity."  The neighbors believe this creates a great risk to the community, particularly since the facility is close to a park and a school.

The facility will have 15 beds, half of which will house the criminally insane.  It will also have 4 holding cells, 24 x 7 staffing and 24 parking places.  It is termed a "secure lockdown facility".

In an attempt to prevent Columbia Care from buying the site,

Pearl District Changes — Exit World Cup, Enter Laughing Planet

by shooter
laughing planet logo World Cup Coffee in the Ecotrust Building will close its doors on Saturday. The company said that the Pearl location wasn't performing as well as its other stores. The lagging performance, along with other factors, led to the company's decision to close the store. World Cup's other locations will remain open, including its nearby store and roasting plant at NW 18th and Glisan. The Ecotrust Building is a prime location and you wouldn't expect it to remain empty for long—it's not, it's already leased! Laughing Planet has leased the space and will open a new café later this year. If you're not familiar with Laughing Planet, here's an excerpt from their website: "The Laughing Planet Café is a quick-service restaurant that serves nutritious fare in the form of tasty burritos (aka "PNDs" or "Portable Nutrition Devices"), bowls, soups, salads, smoothies, juices and home-made cookies. We are dedicated to making wholesome food a
